“Everything looks normal.” Yet month after month, you’re still not pregnant. 💔

One of the most frustrating parts of an unexplained infertility diagnosis is feeling like you’ve reached the end of the investigation without understanding WHY conception isn’t happening.

While standard fertility investigations are an important starting point, they don’t always provide the full picture.

Fertility is influenced by multiple interconnected systems, including reproductive hormones, metabolic health, inflammation, nutritional status and s***m health. 🔗

Some contributing factors may warrant further investigation, while others may benefit from more targeted nutrition and lifestyle support. 🎯

The important thing is understanding which areas are relevant to YOUR individual fertility journey, rather than simply ordering more tests and trying to do everything!

This is the approach I take with my clients ➡️ reviewing their history, connecting the dots and developing a personalised plan alongside appropriate medical care.

Some fertility advice is honestly… TERRIFYING! 👻

Especially when you’re doing everything you can to conceive, yet you’re still being told to “just relax”, everything is “normal”, or that your next step is IVF. 😩

As a Fertility Nutritionist and Pharmacist, these are some of the things that haunt me most. 🎃

Not because people are doing anything wrong, but because fertility is complex, and the advice and investigations you receive should reflect that.

Your reproductive health doesn’t exist in isolation from the rest of your body.

Nutrition, metabolic health, hormones, thyroid function, gut health, nutrient status and s***m health are all important pieces of the bigger picture.

✨ You deserve fertility care that is individualised, evidence-based and considers the WHOLE picture. 🫶🏼

Which one of these have you heard before? Let me know in the comments!

When you’re TTC, every meal and snack is another opportunity to nourish your fertility! ✨

Fertility nutrition isn’t about eating perfectly, following restrictive food rules or spending hours preparing meals.

It’s about consistently providing your body with the energy and nutrients it needs to support hormone production, ovulation, egg and s***m health, and a healthy pregnancy.🤰

One of the simplest ways to do this is by choosing snacks that combine protein, fibre-rich carbohydrates (including fruits, veg or wholegrains) and healthy fats. ✅

This combination can help:
✨ Support steadier blood sugar levels
✨ Maintain more consistent energy throughout the day
✨ Increase your intake of key fertility-supporting nutrients
✨ Keep you feeling satisfied between meals
✨ Build greater nutrient and plant diversity across your week

The good news is, your snacks don’t need to be complicated to be nutritious!

Some of the best options are those you can put together in minutes, using everyday ingredients you already have in your fridge or pantry. 🙌🏽

Remember, optimising your fertility nutrition isn’t about individual ‘superfoods’ or getting every meal and snack perfect.

It’s your overall dietary pattern, nutritional adequacy and consistency over time that matter most. 💕

Folate is one of the most important nutrients to consider when preparing for pregnancy, yet it’s often overlooked when it comes to dietary intake. 🌱

While many women focus on their prenatal supplement, getting enough folate through food is just as important!

Why is folate so important for fertility and pregnancy? 🤰

Folate (vitamin B9) plays an essential role in:
🧬 DNA synthesis and repair – supporting healthy cell division and reproductive function.
🥚 Egg and s***m quality – supporting the cellular processes involved in their development.
🤰 Early fetal development – adequate folate helps reduce the risk of neural tube defects.

So, how much do you need? 🤔

Australian and New Zealand guidelines recommend a daily folate intake of 400 micrograms for non-pregnant adults, increasing to 600 micrograms during pregnancy.

Women planning pregnancy are also advised to take at least 400 micrograms of folic acid daily, starting before conception and continuing through the first trimester.

Importantly, this is recommended alongside a folate-rich diet, not as a replacement for one!

🥬 Think leafy greens, broccoli, lentils, chickpeas, avocado, citrus fruits and fortified wholegrains.

What about your prenatal? 💊
Not all prenatals contain the same forms or amounts of folate, and individual requirements can vary depending on your health history, medications and previous pregnancy outcomes.

Supporting your fertility isn’t just about taking supplements. It’s about meeting your nutritional needs through a varied diet AND appropriate supplementation.

Your nutrition is the foundation and supplements are the support crew 🤝

Something most women TTC don’t realise… their cycle-tracking app may be FAR less accurate than they think! 😳

I see this so often in my fertility clinic 👉Women diligently tracking their cycles, relying on apps to predict ovulation and their fertile window. 📲

Yet month after month, they’re still not conceiving. 💔

Here’s the thing…

🚨 Research found that calendar-based apps correctly predicted the day of ovulation no more than 21% of the time!

Another study found that only 12.7% of women seeking fertility assistance could accurately identify their fertile window. 🪟

So what’s the problem with relying on an app alone?
Most calendar-based apps estimate ovulation using previous cycle dates. Yet ovulation doesn’t always occur on day 14, and its timing can vary even with regular cycles. 🔄

Meaning you could be missing some of your most fertile days without realising it!

Here’s what I’d encourage my clients to do instead 👇🏼

✔️ Track cervical mucus: Changes can help identify your fertile window.
✔️ Use ovulation predictor kits (OPKs): Detect the LH surge that typically precedes ovulation.
✔️ Monitor basal body temperature: A sustained rise can indicate ovulation has likely occurred.
✔️ Consider progesterone testing: When indicated, test approximately 7 days after suspected ovulation (not automatically on CD21).

Importantly, predicting ovulation and confirming ovulation are NOT the same thing!

Combining these methods can provide a clearer picture of your cycle than relying on an app alone.

If your cycles are irregular, you’re struggling to identify ovulation or you’ve been TTC without success, I’d want to investigate WHY.

💖 This is part of what I help women uncover in my fertility consultations. Looking beyond apps to identify potential underlying factors and develop a personalised plan to optimise your fertility.
