From Sunday, a new Medicare check for three year olds was introduced. Here is the plain version, with nothing added. 💙

What it is. It is called the Medicare Healthy Kids Check, and it starts on 1 November.

It is a health assessment for three year old children, and it forms part of the Commonwealth’s Thriving Kids initiative.

Who does it. Your GP. This is a check at your doctor, not something you book with us or with any allied health clinic.

What to do if your child is three. Ask your GP about it at your next visit. That is genuinely the whole action.

What has not changed. Nothing about NDIS supports has changed because of this. And here on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland has still not signed its Thriving Kids agreement with the Commonwealth, so nothing about Thriving Kids services has changed for Queensland families either.

If and when that moves, you will hear it from us.

What we do not know yet, and we would rather say so than guess: exactly how the check runs in practice, what your GP will look at, and how any next steps work from there. Your GP will be across the detail long before we are because it is their item.🧡

Here is the honest thing underneath all of this. A good check is not a test your child passes or fails. It is a conversation with somebody who knows children, at an age where a lot is changing quickly.

If something comes up, that is the check doing its job, and it is a very ordinary and very good starting place. And if nothing comes up, you get to stop wondering.

If you are at all unsure what any of it means for your family, you are welcome to ring us and ask. We will tell you what we know, we will tell you what we do not, and we will never make something sound more certain than it is. 🙏

Save this one if you have a three year old, or send it to the parent who does, and if in doubt, or if you have concerns we’re always here to help. 🩵

The drop off, the never-ending sock hunt, the shoes or banana peeled wrong.. The meltdown is almost never about the thing it looks like it is about. 💙

It is OT Week, so here is a piece of occupational therapy thinking you can try at the breakfast table tomorrow morning.

When your child digs their heels in about something, the instinct is to look at the thing - getting dressed, the shoes, the seatbelt, the drop off.

Try looking at the five minutes before it instead.

Because a child who falls apart at getting dressed is very rarely being difficult about clothes. It might be the seam of the sock. It might be a morning moving faster than a body that is still working out buttons. It might be that this is the fourth instruction in a row and the first three used everything they had. 🧡

So you change one thing about the before. More time. A different sock. Clothes laid out the night prior. Taking a calm minute in the car before the transition to school. One instruction instead of four.

And very often you change the whole battle, without ever having a conversation about the shoes.

That is the move. Not “how do I get them to do this”, but “what is making this hard right now, and can I take one piece of it away”.

It is not a trick and it doesn’t work every time. But it is the question our OTs ask first, in every single room, about everything from handwriting to mealtimes to the school pick-up. The behaviour you can see is the end of the story. The interesting part happened just before it.

Save this one for tomorrow morning, or send it to the parent you know who is currently losing the sock war. 🧦

It is OT Week! This year’s theme is two words that happen to describe the whole job: Participation Matters.

Meet Justine, Georgia and Amelia, our occupational therapists. 👏🏻👑

Occupational therapy can be misunderstood in paediatrics. Here’s a breakdown ✨ The occupation of childhood is daily life. Getting dressed without stress and anx. Managing breakfast. Joining the play, and staying in it when somebody changes the rules. Sitting in the circle. Having a go at writing. Coping with a classroom that is loud and bright and always moving. 🩵

So they do not treat handwriting ➡️ They help a child get their ideas onto the page before frustration beats them to it.

They do not treat fussy eating ➡️ They help a family get back to dinner just being dinner.

And this term, on top of a full week of families, our team have walked into GP practices, kindies and early learning centres right across the Coast. Because they would rather introduce themselves to the people who see you first than wait until somebody needs them 💙

Tomorrow is World OT Day, and these three are taking over our pages to show you more of what they love. Keep an eye out.

Participation matters, children matter, people matter.

If your family knows Justine, Georgia or Amelia, say hello to them in the comments 👋 They read them, and it makes their whole week. ☺️

We loved being with Smartland tonight and talking all things prep-readiness. Georgia (Occupational Therapist) and Hannah (Speech Pathologist) sharing on development, supports, tips and tricks to help get our kids - and parents - ready and confident for the prep year ahead. ✨

💙 ‘Is my child ready for prep?’ is a common question or a midnight worry at this time of year.

Our team love supporting kindy kids and their families to both get ready and feel ready. It’s a big shift for you all and we take joy in being there for you every step. Kindy talks, phone calls, here in the socials or in 1:1 support, we are passionate about you starting prep with strength and confidence. 💐

If you have questions, pop a comment below or in our DMs, we love hearing from you. If you’d rather just ask directly we would always rather you call us than wait and worry. Head to the link in our bio and you can book a discovery call tonight, tomorrow, whatever time or day you’re seeing this.

We love you Sunny Coast, let’s get our kids off to a wonderful start! 🙌🏼

🎢 Team bonding, a lot of laughs, and a whole lot of fun! 🎬✨

Our team swapped the clinic for the rollercoasters and spent our team day at Movie World! From big thrills to even bigger laughs, it was the perfect day to make memories, strengthen our team, and enjoy some time together outside the clinic. 💛🎡

The grommets are in. Will his speech catch up on its own?

Sometimes, yes.

But this is the part families are rarely told, and it is the reason we get this question most weeks.

Speech sounds are learned by hearing them clearly, thousands and thousands of times. A child who spent stretches of their toddler years hearing the world as though it were underwater may have quietly learned some of those sounds a little differently. Grommets give back the hearing. They do not go back and re-teach the sounds. 💙

So here is the gentle rule of thumb our speech pathologists use.

Once the hearing has settled, you want to see speech on the move within a few months. Clearer words. New sounds turning up. Grandparents and strangers understanding more of what your child says than they did at Christmas.

If it is moving, keep going and enjoy watching it happen. You do not need us.

If it has gone quiet, a speech check is not a verdict and it is not a referral into anything. It is a shortcut. One short assessment tells you whether to relax or whether to give those sounds a hand early, while they are easiest to shift. 🧡

Save this one if you are in the waiting-and-watching phase, or send it to the parent you know who is.

We are only ever a phone call away. 💐

We asked the team to guess what we had planned for our quarter cuddle day… 👀😂

Little did they know, we were off to MOVIE WORLD! 🎢🎬🎡

Because looking after our team is just as important as looking after everyone else 💛 A day full of laughs, thrills and fun outside the clinic!

“Is my child ready for Prep?”

If you have asked yourself that in the last fortnight, you are in very good company. Term 4 is two weeks old and this is the question doing laps of every carpark on the Coast.

So here is the calmer way we think about it, and it is almost never the thing parents expect. 🙏🏼

Readiness is not the alphabet. It is not counting to twenty, and it is not writing their name neatly. Those things are lovely, and they are also the easiest things to teach once a child is there.

What we actually look at is four quieter things.

💛 Big feelings across a long day. Not staying calm. Nobody stays calm. Can they come back from a disappointment and have another go, with a grown up nearby?

💚Being understood when the room is noisy. Following two instructions at home is one skill. Following them with twenty four other kids in the room is a completely different one.

💙 Having another go. A child who will stay with something tricky for one more try is readier than a child who performs beautifully until the first wobble.

🩷 Joining the play, and staying in it. Getting in is one thing. Staying in when somebody changes the rules is the skill the playground actually runs on.

A child can know every letter and still find those four hard. A child can know no letters at all and be beautifully ready.

And here is the part we most want you to hear. All four of those grow. They are skills, not a verdict. Readiness is not a pass or a fail, and your child is not sitting an exam you forgot to study for. 💙

If you are weighing it up, including the “one more year of kindy” question, Term 4 is exactly the right time to be thinking about it, and you do not have to think about it on your own. No referral needed for a chat.

Save this one for the next carpark conversation, or send it to the parent you know is quietly wondering. 🫶🏼
