I used to believe all ni**le care products on the market were much the same… until I started looking more closely at the ingredients and the research.

There is a lot of thought behind my Ni**le Butter and that’s exactly how I wanted it to be.

Did you know Aloe Vera has been researched for its benefits in managing ni**le pain during breastfeeding?

A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis involving seven studies and 1,670 women found that Aloe Vera had a positive effect on reducing breast pain and irritation in lactating women.

It’s one of the reasons I was so intentional about the ingredients I chose.

Combining carefully selected plant oils, herbs and Aloe Vera creates a considered blend designed to soothe and protect ni**les during breastfeeding.

As a Midwife with almost 20 years of experience, I’ve seen firsthand how ni**le discomfort can influence a mother’s breastfeeding journey.

I created my Ni**le Butter with that experience in mind.

Because while breastfeeding is about mastering correct positioning and attachment, it’s also about being very selective with your ni**le care along the way.

When should a newborn have their first breastfeed?

This was one of the topics we discussed at a recent Lactation Training I hosted.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends immediate, uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact following birth and initiation of breastfeeding within the first hour.

This is also consistent with Australian breastfeeding guidance.

But let’s look a little deeper at the research.

A systematic review and meta-analysis involving 136,047 infants found that breastfeeding initiation between 2–23 hours after birth was associated with a 33% higher relative risk of neonatal death compared with initiation within the first hour.

There is an important caveat here. Much of this research comes from low and middle income countries, where baseline neonatal risks and access to healthcare differ from those in Australia.

Furthermore the Australian Breastfeeding Association acknowledges that newborns need time to progress through their instinctive behaviours. This can include:

• Salivating and chewing their hands.

• Moving towards the ni**le.

• Licking and nuzzling while using their reflexes.

• Eventually attaching and having their first breastfeed.

Some babies will take longer than an hour.

The key message is that we should encourage breastfeeding within the first hour, without turning that recommendation into a deadline.

My interpretation is that we should aim for that first breastfeed within the first hour, while recognising that the first 1–2 hours may be a more realistic window for some mother-baby dyads.

A day of learning, sharing and aligning our practice.

From global breastfeeding statistics and improving exclusivity rates (first 6 months), to the importance of the WHO Code, following the Baby Friendly Health Initiative and taking a consistent, evidence based approach to Mastitis… these are just some of the topics we explore at this training day.

Because breastfeeding families deserve better than conflicting advice…

Midwives, be careful telling a mum that her attachment looks right when she’s telling you she’s in pain.

Today, I had a Telehealth appointment with a mum in Warragul who was experiencing significant pain with breastfeeding.

The midwives in hospital have been trying to reassure her that her baby’s attachment looked right, yet she was still in pain. Understandably, she was confused.

What we see on the outside doesn’t always tell us the full story.

A baby can appear to be well attached and still be causing ni**le pain or trauma.

So, what can you do next when a mum tells you breastfeeding hurts, even when the attachment looks good?

This week’s email to my mailing list will cover practical things you can try, questions to ask and what else to consider when supporting a mother experiencing breastfeeding pain.

💌 Would you like to feel more confident supporting the next mum who tells you breastfeeding hurts? Comment or dm ‘EMAIL’ and I’ll send you my tips.

I got back in the car after doing a Breastfeeding Appointment today to discover Facebook had restricted my page. Again 🙃

This time, my content apparently breaches its Community Standards and my page can’t be recommended to under-18s.

Breastfeeding imagery is exempt under Meta’s adult nudity rules, but automated moderation doesn’t always get the context right.

I wonder if the Victoria’s Secret models experience the same issue 😂 Haha no shade to the models, but it does make you question the cultural double standard around breasts; we’re comfortable sexualising them, yet breastfeeding can still be treated as inappropriate 💆‍♀️

So after I’d spent almost 2 hours with a beautiful client helping her learn how to breastfeed her baby and here’s my takeaway of all this, perhaps the problem isn’t breasts. Perhaps it’s how we’ve learnt to see them...
