The diagnosis on a scan does not predict the treatment.

We get sent scan reports all the time with the question: “What treatment do I need?”

A report does not tell you the treatment.

A proper examination, especially a detailed subjective assessment, will always give you far more useful information than a scan alone.

Many of us were taught early in our careers that certain scan findings automatically meant a specific treatment approach. As you know, real-world clinical practice rarely works that way.

With experience and continued study, you learn to assess movement patterns, irritability, functional capacity and the person’s lived experience. This gives you the true picture of what is driving their symptoms.

Most of the time, what shows up on a scan is not actually the primary source of someone’s pain.

So remember: an examination, especially a subjective one, will tell you more than a scan report.

Scapular push-ups help improve our ability to control and move the shoulder blades independently. People with a stiff upper back or shoulder pain can often struggle with this movement. They’re also a great exercise for strengthening the serratus anterior, which plays an important role in scapular control and can help improve a winging scapula.

💫📕 Our Pose-Ability Method Workbook includes the exact activation, stability, mobility, and posing preparation strategies we use to help clients move better, train harder, and feel more confident both in the gym and on the bodybuilding stage 👠

SERRATUS ANTERIOR STRENGTH!

Torch Presses of any form are wonderful, but Andrew’s choice is the Two Handed Torch Press.

The two hand Torch Press is an exercise he used for decades and is certainly one of the basic strength movements he integrated.

Enjoy the work!

Part of being a great coach is working with your client and prescribing exercises that they will actually do. We understand that some guys don’t enjoy training glutes. The good news is, there are many variations we can choose from in order to find something that is easy to execute, and will get the job done.

Paul enjoys warming up before a lower body session with standing banded extensions/ abductions 👌🏽

This is also great for lower back rehab, or before a running session. Pair this with your core work and you are all set!

Supine banded abductions 📝 By holding the hip in the neutral position of 0° and being well supported only at the shoulder, we engage glute max at is the best position for strength.

We then add abduction and externally rotation which increases the glute max contraction.

Place the chin onto the chest to engage the abdominals and prevent lumbar extension.

One of many glute activation variations that we use with our rehab patients and athletes.

Your hip flexors often feel tight and sore because they’re doing too much work. If your core and glutes aren’t doing their job properly, your hip flexors step in to help keep your pelvis and spine stable. Over time, they get overworked and stay tight.

Sitting all day makes this worse. Your glutes don’t work hard, your hip flexors stay shortened and your body learns to rely on them more than it should, both in everyday movement and in training.

Basically, your body has a safety system: when things aren’t moving well at the hips or pelvis, it limits how much certain muscles (like your glutes) can work. The hip flexors take over instead, which leads to that constant tight feeling.

Here’s a variation on the lock clam that you can try:

1️⃣ The Lock Clam x 25
🔹Lie face down on a bench, with one leg straight and one leg bent.
🔹Hook your foot behind your calf.
🔹With a small movement, bring your knee out to the side, towards the ceiling.
🔹Stop the movement before you feel your hips tilting.

_________

The power big three. Prepare for training!
15-25 reps of each.

1️⃣Supine Clams banded with knee bent 90 degrees.

🔺 Biomechanically the most effective Glute max contraction is zero degrees at hip and 90 degrees at knee to take out hamstring.

2️⃣ Banded Hip Thrust.
🔺 Dynamic hip extension with abduction and external rotation to maximise Glute activation.

3️⃣ Banded touch and go Squat.
🔺Activation has set up Glutes to maximise in position where hamstrings and adductors are more efficient hip extensors.
🔺 Adding a counterbalance here (holding a weight out in front) increases core contribution.

To be performed before your lower body sessions, or to be used as hip or knee rehab (performed daily).
