What if we started paying attention to cholesterol decades before heart disease develops?

When it comes to cardiovascular health, it’s not just about your cholesterol levels today. Lifetime exposure matters.

And there’s more to the story than your standard cholesterol test.

Lifetime LDL exposure
LDL particles carry cholesterol through your bloodstream. The longer you’re exposed to elevated LDL cholesterol, the greater your risk of plaque buildup. The 40-year vs. 100-year comparison in this reel illustrates cumulative exposure—not a fixed timeline for developing heart disease.

Know your apoB
Think of cholesterol-carrying particles as delivery trucks. LDL cholesterol measures how much cholesterol is being carried by LDL particles, while apoB helps estimate how many potentially plaque-forming particles are circulating. A higher number of these particles can indicate greater cardiovascular risk, even with similar LDL cholesterol levels.

Don’t overlook Lp(a)
Largely inherited, elevated Lp(a) can increase heart disease and stroke risk, even when LDL cholesterol is within the normal range. Canadian guidelines recommend measuring it once in adulthood.

What can you do now?
✓ Ask your healthcare provider about apoB and Lp(a) testing.
✓ Know your family history, especially early heart disease.
✓ Stay on top of blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol.

Prevention starts with understanding your risk—not waiting for symptoms.

General educational information. Testing and treatment decisions should be individualized with your healthcare professional.

Weight loss is measurable. But meaningful progress isn’t always captured by a number.

As GLP-1 medications reshape the approach to weight management and metabolic health, they also invite a broader conversation about what successful treatment looks like.

Beyond clinical markers, there’s the experience of living in your body. Feeling capable, maintaining your quality of life and supporting your long-term health.

Because the goal isn’t simply to change a number. It’s to improve health in ways that matter to you.

When it comes to PCOS, the signs aren’t always as straightforward as you might expect.

Irregular periods are often associated with the condition. But what if your cycle is predictable and other symptoms raise questions?

A diagnosis requires looking beyond any single sign.

Swipe to learn why regular periods don’t necessarily rule out PCOS.

Peptides are having a moment. But the hype is moving faster than the human evidence.

Take BPC-157: the research remains overwhelmingly preclinical, with very limited human data to date.

Promising? Possibly. Proven? That’s a different question.

In longevity medicine, one question is always worth asking: what does the human evidence actually show?

For general educational information.

What happens when a career spent treating people at the point of crisis makes you start asking what could have prevented it?

For our Founder and Medical Director, that question became the thread connecting two decades in emergency medicine and humanitarian work to her practice today: one focused on prevention, hormonal and metabolic health, and longevity.

In this excerpt from a recent podcast conversation with Cindy Schwartz, Dr. Johnson speaks about menopause, longevity, and why quality of life matters as we age.

The conversation was prompted by the release of her new book, which tells much of the story that came before this chapter.

So what connects her humanitarian work and emergency medicine career to her practice at Medalma today?

She connects the dots in our latest blog. Find the full story and the Spotify podcast at the links in our bio.

Should you get genetic testing for longevity? 🧬

Not every genetic variant is actionable and more data doesn’t always mean better care.

From MTHFR to BRCA and pharmacogenomics, the question is: will knowing the result actually change what you do?

That’s where genetic testing becomes useful.

Would you get your DNA tested?
