PRISM YOGA & HEALING Patti spreads awareness how yoga, meditation & mindfulness have helped her navigate living with YOPD since 2011.

Sharing our wins increases hope and happiness.
🩵🌈💎 Patti Johnson is a Yoga and Meditation Teacher living with the symptoms of Young Onset Parkinson's Disease since 2006. Patti attended Yoga Training and Immersion in Rishikesh, India in 2016. She is a Certified Mindfulness Coach and is happy to share and help others learn to cope well and live happily despite a diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease or other chronic health condition. As a person living with YOPD, Patti feels strongly that an at home yoga practice is the best way to enjoy the benefits of yoga. She preaches what she practices, which is prioritizing getting to the mat everyday for at least 5 minutes to listen to the body and mind. When that attainable goal is the plan, the profound benefits of listening to one's body and reveling in well-being will follow. Continuously furthering her education, Patti is now a Certified Trauma Informed Yoga Teacher and is currently in pursuit of her C-IAYT so that she may assist others as a Yoga Therapist.

It takes a lot of effort just to get out of bed when you have Parkinson’s, but I do it every damn day (because I have to pee… often 🤣) I have to admit, it does feel like being diagnosed with Parkinson’s at age 39 has ripped my life away from me. Not just a little bit now that I’m 15 years in.

Changes started slowly, thankfully, I was already keen on a healthy lifestyle but nowadays I have to choose how I spend my energy very carefully.

Things I am grateful to have prioritized:

CARDIO: Getting the heart rate up there is proven to slow progression.

YOGA: My practice has definitely changed over the years but it has helped me continue to stand tall and keep my body aligned despite PD.

PLAN: I admit I was never too much of a GOAL setting girl but a smart goal can really help keep me focused.

Change isn’t easy but it is inevitable. Choosing the changes I make helps me feel in control. Because I don’t have control over a lot of what this disease throws my way. But I do still have control over my bladder (often) which is impressive at this stage of PD. Yay me! 🧋🫖🧃Stay hydrated PD people! 🙂

Alan Alda is doing well despite Parkinson’s. He keeps hope alive by following his plan along with accepting the reality of disease and finding humour wherever he can.

In a memorable MASH episode Alan Alda as “Hawkeye”—where he is concussed and must keep himself awake by talking continuously— delivers a famous philosophical monologue honoring the precision and anatomy of a surgeon’s hands.

“Look at your hand. It’s one of the most incredible instruments in the universe. Of all the bones in the body, one fourth are in the hand... Look at your thumb; that wondrous mechanism that separates us from the other animals. The world-famous opposable thumb...”
~Benjamin Franklin Pierce

Whether your hands shake or not, remember these wise words of Nelson Mandela; “It is in your hands to create a better world for all who live in it.”

High-intensity exercise like running or scaling steep terrain triggers the release of endorphins, endocannabinoids, and dopamine. For people with Parkinson’s disease, reaching a “runner’s high” state or engaging in vigorous aerobic activity does more than boost mood—it actively protect, preserve, and enhance vulnerable dopamine-producing neurons in the brain AND IS THE ONLY THING PROVEN TO DO SO! Sorry for yelling. Let’s stop progressing and get that cardio on!! 🫀💗
