What does coffee do to your body?

Blocks Relaxation: Caffeine attaches to adenosine receptors in the brain, stopping adenosine (a chemical that naturally calms the body and promotes sleep) from doing its job.

Activates "Fight-or-Flight": It stimulates the central nervous system and triggers the release of stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol.

Mimics Physical Symptoms: This chemical surge increases your heart rate, raises blood pressure, and causes restlessness, tremors, or rapid breathing, which closely mirror the physical feelings of an anxiety attack.

Switch to decaf or reduce consumption to half and see how you feel!

The first time I heard the term "crazy-making," I thought it was hyperbole. It isn't. It's the most precise description I've ever found for what happens when you love someone who is kind to everyone but you.

Debbie Mirza wrote this book for the people who have spent years feeling confused, exhausted, and fundamentally unsure of their own reality. People whose partners, parents, or bosses seem wonderful to the outside world, generous, humble, beloved, while quietly dismantling them in private. The covert narcissist doesn't scream. They don't hit. They don't leave visible marks. They do something worse: they make you believe you're the problem.

Mirza opens with a question that stops you cold: What if the narcissist is one of the nicest people you've ever met? What if they're the mother who volunteers at the school, the husband your friends wish they had, the boss everyone feels lucky to work for?

That's the covert narcissist. They share the same traits as the overt type, the grandiosity, the lack of empathy, the need for admiration, but they've learned to hide it. They know that obvious arrogance repels people. So they perform humility instead. They act like they care. They mirror your emotions so convincingly that you believe they feel what you feel . And because everyone else sees the mask, you're the only one who experiences the destructive behavior underneath it .

Mirza catalogs the tactics with clinical precision and unmistakable recognition. The silent treatment. The passive-aggressive punishment. The subtle putdowns disguised as jokes. The invalidation of your feelings. The weaponization of your insecurities, the very things you confided in them, turned into weapons .

What makes it so damaging is the intermittency. They don't abuse you constantly. They abuse you, apologize, behave well for a few days, then repeat the cycle . You spend years working desperately for a reward, love, attention, kindness, that only comes on their terms, unpredictably, just often enough to keep you hoping.

And when you finally confront them? They tell you you're too sensitive. Overly dramatic. You blame everyone else. You don't take responsibility for yourself . You begin to wonder if they're right.

The hardest chapter is the one that tells you the relationship was never what you thought it was. "The truth is this relationship never meant the same to them as it did to you," Mirza writes. "You approached it from a genuine, goodhearted, loving place. They did not" .

That sentence hurts because it's true. For years, you believed you were building something together. They were building something too, but it was a supply line. You were their energy source. They sought you out because you were kind, self-reflective, loving, and caring . Without those qualities, you would have been useless to them. They chose you because of the parts of you they would eventually destroy.

Mirza calls this cognitive dissonance: the impossible task of reconciling the person you thought existed with the person you now see . It's exhausting. It's painful. And it's the beginning of healing.

The Lessons That Stay With You:

Your body knew before your mind did. Mirza writes about the stomach that rolls in warning, the instinct that something is off . You ignored it because they seemed so reasonable. Because they sounded confident. Because you were used to trusting them. But your body is an accurate barometer. It always tells the truth.

You are not crazy. The most common word survivors use is "crazy-making" . The gaslighting makes you question your own view of reality, sometimes your own sanity. You are not crazy. You were manipulated. Those are different things.

You have a gold mine inside you. Mirza insists that self-trust is a muscle you can rebuild. Every time you choose to believe yourself over them, you strengthen it. And over time, life begins to flow with more ease, more enjoyment, more love.

Mirza writes near the end: "You have experienced the illusion of love, not the real thing. Not even close" .

That's the hardest sentence in the book. And the most freeing. Because once you know it was an illusion, you can stop grieving the person you thought you lost. They never existed. What you lost was years of your life, spent loving someone who was never really there.

Now you can start looking for what's real. Starting with yourself.
