Gin, Chartreuse and Bénédictine all share one old botanical: angelica root.

Those drinks started out as after-dinner digestive tonics, and angelica is a big reason why.

🌿 It's a bitter aromatic. The bitter taste gets digestion going, while its warm oils help settle a heavy, full feeling.
🌿 It grows wild in cold, damp meadows across Northern Europe and has been a kitchen herb there for centuries.
🌿 We make our Angelica tincture from the dried root using the classic 1:5 method.

Good to know: angelica can make skin more sun-sensitive, and it isn't for use during pregnancy.

That little purple plant in your lawn has a name worth knowing: self heal.

Prunella vulgaris has earned names like heal-all, woundwort and carpenter's herb. Here's what we cover in our new guide:

🌿 Why 16th-century herbalist John Gerard called it the best wound herb in the world
🌿 How its tannins and rosmarinic acid explain its traditional use in gargles and skin washes
🌿 Simple ways to use it as a tincture, tea, rinse or compress

Ever had a cup of strong black tea leave your mouth dry and puckered? That feeling is the key to agrimony. 🌼

Agrimony (Agrimonia eupatoria) is a tall rose-family herb with spikes of small yellow flowers, once nicknamed "church steeples."

🌿 It's rich in tannins, which gently tone tissue they touch
🌿 Herbalists traditionally use it for mild, short-term loose stools and an unsettled stomach
🌿 Cooled agrimony tea makes a classic gargle for a scratchy throat

We make our agrimony tincture in small batches in Toronto using the classic 1:5 method.

That "berry" in your gin is not a berry at all. It's a soft, fleshy cone that takes two to three years to ripen. 🌲

Juniper (Juniperus communis) has a long history as a warming herb for the season of heavy meals:

🫐 Traditionally used to ease gas and bloating after rich food
💧 A classic herb for supporting healthy urine flow
🌿 Its piney volatile oil gives it a clean, bracing character

Juniper is a strong herb, so traditional practice keeps its use short. Our new guide covers its history, how it works, and how to use it with care.

Yak herders in Tibet noticed it first: animals that grazed on a strange little mushroom seemed livelier. 🍄

That mushroom is cordyceps, known in Chinese as D**g Chong Xia Cao, "winter worm, summer grass."

A few things worth knowing:
🏔️ Wild cordyceps grows above 3,000 metres and is rare, so most today is cultivated Cordyceps militaris
🌿 In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is a warming tonic, traditionally used for fatigue and low stamina
🔬 It contains cordycepin, a compound shaped much like adenosine, which plays a part in how cells use energy

Think slow and steady tonic, not a coffee-style jolt.

Did you know one of the world's most prized ginseng roots grows right here in Ontario?

American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) has been traded from Canadian forests since 1716. Today, most of it is grown under shade on farms like this one, while the wild plant stays protected.

🌿 Cooling and steadying, unlike warming Korean red ginseng
🌿 Traditionally used for fatigue, dryness and seasonal resilience
🌿 Easy to take as a simmered tea, a chewed slice or a tincture

Can a root grown at 4,000 metres help you through a grey Canadian fall? 🌱

Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is an Andean root that farmers in Peru have grown for about two thousand years. A few things worth knowing:

🟤 It's a cousin of the radish and turnip, and Andean families ate it as a strengthening food long before anyone called it a supplement.
🟤 Small studies link it with energy, mood and libido, with no measurable change in hormone levels.
🟤 It tastes earthy and a little nutty, so it slips easily into oatmeal, smoothies or hot cocoa.

That black, cracked lump on a birch tree isn't burnt wood. It's chaga.

Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is a slow-growing fungus from northern forests, and people in Siberia, Finland and across the boreal north have brewed it as a winter tea for generations.

🍄 It draws betulin and betulinic acid from its birch host
🍄 It contains beta-glucans, the same complex sugars found in reishi and turkey tail
🍄 Simmer it for an hour and you get a dark, earthy tea with a hint of vanilla

We cover its history, what's inside it, how to brew it and who should be careful with it in our new guide.

During WWII, Britain sent volunteers into the hedgerows to pick rose hips. Citrus was scarce, and these little red fruits filled the gap. 🌹

Rose hips are the fruit the dog rose (Rosa canina) leaves behind once its pink petals fall. Here's what makes them worth a spot in your fall routine:

🍂 Fresh rose hips rank among the richest wild sources of vitamin C in cooler climates
🍂 They also carry carotenoids, flavonoids and pectin, so they offer more than a single nutrient
🍂 Heat breaks down vitamin C, so steep your rose hip tea in water just off the boil

Tart, ruby red and easy to brew, rose hip tea is a simple way to welcome the colder months.

Iodine was discovered in seaweed ash back in 1811. One of those seaweeds still sits on our shelves.

Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus) is a brown seaweed from the cold rocky shores of the North Atlantic. Herbalists have long turned to it for thyroid health.

🌊 It is a natural source of iodine, the mineral your thyroid uses to build its hormones
🌿 It also carries alginates, a soothing soluble fibre, plus trace minerals like potassium and magnesium
⚖️ Iodine works on a curve, so bladderwrack is not for everyone. Skip it with an overactive thyroid, Hashimoto's, thyroid medication, or during pregnancy, and talk to a practitioner first

We offer it as a tincture, a glycerite, or dried for a savoury, broth-like tea.
