Your spine has an ancient history.
Long before we stood upright, walked on land, or reached with arms and legs, our vertebrate ancestors moved through water. Their spines travelled from side to side in waves — the same side-bending intelligence that still moves through you now.
When life emerged onto land, the spine had to solve a new problem: how to support and move a body in gravity. Over time, it developed the capacity to move in all three planes — bending forward and back, side bending, and rotating.
No single vertebra does this alone. Each one is designed to contribute a tiny amount of movement. Together, the 24 mobile vertebrae create something remarkable: intricate, adaptable, complex movement through multiple planes.
This is the spine we will explore from the inside out in Find Your Backbone: Experiential Anatomy for the Spine, my 10-hour online course through YogaCampus.
Through experiential anatomy, somatic inquiry, movement repatterning, breath and sound, we will rediscover the spine not as a rigid column, but as a living midline — a source of support, resilience and graceful movement.

When you side-bend, can you sense the ancient swim still moving through your spine?
