❤️ Meet the "mum" of the Dusty Forge kitchen. Wendy Thomas, who has spent three years turning surplus food into free three-course dinners at Dusty Forge Cardiff, has been named Wales winner of FoodCycle's Volunteer of the Year Awards 2026.

Every Monday at 6.30pm, Wendy and her husband Mark help cook for anyone who turns up at the Dusty Forge on Cowbridge Road West, from soups and pasta bakes to curries, with around 10 children joining most weeks. FoodCycle volunteers have served 3,290 meals across south Wales so far this year and kept almost three tonnes of food out of the bin.

"I didn't sign up to do FoodCycle to win awards," Wendy said. "Team Ely, that's what we call ourselves because we work together."

FoodCycle also runs free meals in Riverside on Wednesdays and Newport on Tuesdays, and anyone over 18 can volunteer. Full story:

Wormwood (the Artemisia genus) is represented by at least 250 species worldwide. Their chemistry is diverse, but one thing they tend to hold in common is potent medicinality. African Wormwood (Artemisia afra) is one of the prettiest and most generally applicable in home medicine. All across its native region it is functionally used in treating fever, dysentery, parasites, respiratory issues and infections. A pretty plant, surprisingly adaptable to temperate gardens. I've posted a video on our youtube channel and will leave a link to the plants in the comments. Meanwhile here's a bit more info:

Wormwood, African (Artemisia afra)

Family: Aster (Asteraceae)

Hardy to Zones 7 to 11

Woody perennial from 3 to 6 feet tall, flowering yellow. Native to Ethiopia and all of southern Africa, occupying the seasonally dry tropical biome. The lacy foliage is showy. The plant exudes a pleasant aroma, especially when stroked. Native uses (TAM): Respiratory, gastrointestinal, and feverish complaints. Poulticed against ringworm, aches and pains. Leaves rolled and inserted in nose as a decongestant. Vermifuge. Insect repellant. Aromatic. Source of artemisia ketone and camphene. Plant prefers full sun and dryish soils. Standard garden soil is fine. Cut back in fall to improve overwintering and lush growth in spring. Space plants 3 feet apart.

"Look at the flower. It's an umbel. It spreads out and makes a broader surface, and the flower helps open the pores of the skin."

Alberto Carbo, RH, in our Seasonal Herbalist Q&A, on why traditional herbalists matched elderflower with letting heat out through the skin. Look at the photo again with that in mind.

Now the berry. Deep purple fruit on stems that turn red as it ripens. Alberto read the color the traditional way, as a sign for the blood: a nourishing fruit. Leigh Arnoldy added one more picture: those clusters on branching red stems look like the alveoli, the tiny air sacs at the far end of the lungs. That look is why so many people have elderberry in mind for coughs and winter bugs.

One plant, two pictures, two traditional jobs. That's the Doctrine of Signatures: what an herb looks like, and what that told the people who used it long before anyone had a lab.

Elderberry is one of the plants we'll discuss on Kids Immune Health with the MWIH Team is this Thursday, October 29, 12:00 noon Central, one hour, included with Herbs A-Z.

Comment KIDS and we'll send you the link.
