Working together to support every step🫰

Moving to a new class can be a big change, especially for children and young people who thrive on familiar routines.

For Henry, even small changes can have a big impact. New surroundings, different people and changes to familiar routines can be challenging, making the move to a new class is an important milestone in his school journey.

From preparing for his move before the summer holidays to colleagues from school and social care working together to help him engage in learning, Henry's story shows the power of understanding each young person's individual needs.

Talking all about Relationships and S*x Education (RSE) 🗣️

The S*x Factor is a training course written and delivered by Chailey Heritage Foundation on the subject of RSE. It is designed for those working with children and young people with complex disabilities and barriers to learning. The S*x Factor consists of two 3-hour training sessions and a host of teaching resources, including almost 50 ready-made lesson plans and over 10 supporting videos, to help empower teachers and staff to deliver quality RSE.

Recently, we welcomed parents and carers to a coffee morning event led by our specialist teacher, Helen Dunman, to discuss these topics and help support support children and young people to learn about relationships, personal safety, boundaries and growing up.

The session provided an opportunity for honest conversations, questions and shared learning between families and colleagues.

Want to find out more about the event, our approach to RSE and how you can access The S*x Factor training?

AAC Awareness Month: AAC in Everyday Life 💜

At our school, every voice matters, and communication takes many different forms. October is Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Awareness Month, a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the diverse ways young people express themselves and connect with the world around them. Communication goes far beyond spoken words, encompassing everything from body language, gestures, and eye-pointing to communication books, sign systems, and high-tech speech-generating devices.

Embracing AAC and alternative forms of communication is vital because it empowers individuals to exercise their independence, express their unique thoughts, feelings, and choices, and build deep, meaningful relationships with peers and the adults around them. By ensuring every young person has access to the right communication tools and the time to be heard, we foster an inclusive environment where every voice is valued, respected, and celebrated.

Meet our wonderful volunteer gardeners! 🌿

We're incredibly fortunate to have a dedicated team of volunteer gardeners who generously give their time, energy and expertise to help create and maintain our beautiful gardens.

Our gardens are much more than beautiful spaces. They are an important part of our environment, carefully designed to encourage the children and young people we support to explore and engage with nature.

Many of the plants have been chosen for their sensory qualities, offering different textures and scents to touch and smell. This is particularly valuable for young people to experience the natural world through all of their senses.

"The garden team is lovely to work with, and I think that both the people that work at Chailey and the children deserve to work and live in a beautiful place, and it's quite a privilege to do it." - Tony, Volunteer Gardener 💬

Whether you're an experienced gardener or simply enjoy spending time outdoors, we'd love to hear from you. Contact us to get involved 👉 [email protected] or WhatsApp: 07909 234187
