My husband still remembers the first time we met (how could he forget 😂). We were sitting next to each other at a dinner party and after eating, I turned to him and said, “I hope you don’t mind but I’m going to have to undo my zip. I’m so bloated!”
Not exactly the most romantic opening line!
I see so many people who’ve just accepted bloating as part of everyday life. Some have even started avoiding certain foods or planning what they wear around it.
But here’s the thing - bloating isn’t always about what you’ve eaten. Yes, food can be a factor but there are a few other things I look at with clients:
~ How you’re eating. Are you rushing meals, chewing properly or eating while stressed? All of these can make a difference.
~ Your bowel habits. You can go to the toilet every day and still be constipated, which is a surprisingly common cause of bloating.
~ Your gut bacteria. Changes in the gut microbiome and conditions such as SIBO can sometimes contribute to persistent bloating.
~ Hormones. Fluctuations throughout your menstrual cycle and during perimenopause can affect digestion and how bloated you feel.
My biggest piece of advice? Please don’t keep cutting foods out in the hope that something will work.
The more useful question is WHY you’re bloating in the first place.
A little bloating after meals is normal, but if it’s happening regularly or affecting your life, it’s worth getting checked.
You shouldn’t have to choose your outfit based on how your stomach might feel after you’ve eaten.
it was your dinner party 🥰
