£100 to the person who guesses what we’re doing in the last video cos me and are absolutely peeing our pants laughing at it 🤣🤣🤣

What a fantastic weekend we’ve had speaking to so many pregnant mamas to be at the in Birmingham! It really is so special to do it all alongside your best friend who shares the same passions as you 🥹🤍💕

But best believe when we get home, we don’t talk to one another for an hour, get into our jammies, lie down and decompress 🤣 there are no bouncing nights out over here 🤣

It’s tiring work trying to change the world one birth at a time but my gosh are we grateful to do it 😉

Happy Halloween or Samhain for my spiritual girlies 😉🎃

Forget the zombies. Forget the clowns in the drains. The scariest stuff you’ll hear this year? It’ll come out of the mouth of someone holding a cup of tea in your living room.

“Just wait until...”
“Enjoy every moment.”
“You’ll be begging for the epidural.”

Even said with a smile. Don’t get me wrong, 90% of the time it’s completely said with love. As humans it’s natural that we try to share experiences to protect the ones we love. But the thing that we forget, is that these comments, these stories… they crawl under your skin and sits there. Brewing.

Every one of those comments lands on a nervous system that’s already working overtime. Pregnancy and the newborn days make you more tuned in to threat, not less. So when someone hands you their horror story, or makes a negative comment your body files it away as evidence.

Which means you’re allowed to protect your peace. Smile, nod, change the subject, walk off. You don’t owe anyone anything.

Now, your turn. What’s the worst thing someone’s said to you? Comments are open and I’m ready to be outraged on your behalf 👻

And if the birth horror stories have got their claws in, that’s exactly the work I do. Link in bio for more info 👀

I honestly feel like there’s a million stories for me to tell.
There’s so much I haven’t shared of my own journey with anxiety and PTSD.

But this weekend was the 1 year anniversary of our amazing trip to New York (do trips even have an anniversary?!) and it really got me in my feels!

Oh my gosh this trip was such a big deal for me. For context, my husband was working away in America, and after realising he was going to be in New York for the weekend, he asked if I’d come out to meet him. For most, this is the easiest and most obvious yes… but after spending the year in therapy to overcome PTSD and anxiety, it was hard to believe something as big as this could be easy for me.

But I knew the only thing holding me back was anxiety, and what a s**t excuse that is eh?!

If there’s one thing you should know about me… yes I have an anxiously wired brain. But I’m not willing to let it stop me. No matter how hard it is.

Oh my gosh that week in the run up to it was insane. I usually do struggle anyway when my husbands away (I suppose that’s love for ya eh?! 🤪) but Harlow also got a sickness bug and I was riddled with anxiety about leaving the kids and doing this big ass flight on my own.

The “What ifs” were SO loud some days.

But I kept going. I used everything I learned in therapy. Even when it felt hard. I challenged myself. I believed in myself even when my brain was trying to convince me not to.

And then, I did it. And I realised, I am so so so much bigger than any of the thoughts I have.

But I realise it’s so hard. I’ve been there too. Thoughts spiralling, heart racing, trying to maintain some sort of composure so people don’t think you’re insane 🤪😅

Me and you, we’re built a little differently. Brains wired in a different way you could say. And so, finding calm works a little differently for us too. And so, that’s why I’m building a birth preparation course specifically for the anxious mind.

The overthinker since birth. The bedtime spiral-er. The “what ifs” wonderer.

I can’t wait to share more with you over the next few weeks. 🤍

It makes perfect sense that if you know you may be exposed to trauma, you do what is in your power to stop it from happening. You have smoke alarms, you switch off dangers electrical items, keep flammable stuff away from heat sources. Your priority is on reducing the risk.

You can’t eradicate every risk, of course. But you do what you can, because that’s completely logical.

Yet, when it comes to birth, so many do the opposite.

We accept risk and trauma as if it’s just a part of the process. It’s commonplace, so it’s just how birth goes right? And we actively choose not to prepare for it. To not try to stop any of the bad stuff from happening. To not take precautions and to not have any sort of toolkit to help us either. .

I don’t understand why we don’t take this more seriously 🥺 a bad birth experience can completely shake up your entire life. It can disrupt your mental health, take over your precious time with baby, even may stop you from ever wanting another.

I don’t say that to scare you, but hopefully to help you see that actually, this s**t is serious.

YET, there’s things we can do to reduce our risk.

I won’t ever pretend that birth prep and hypnobirthing is a magic wand. It’s not. It doesn’t reduce the probability of every single bad thing happening, though I wish it could.

But, it helps you prepare. It shows you how you can reduce the chance of battling those risky areas for experiencing trauma, it shows you how you can support yourself physically and mentally. It shows you that you can remain in control, even when things don’t go exactly how you expect them to.

It helps.

And I just know if someone said I can help you reduce the chance of you experiencing a house fire, you’d say yes. But somehow, when it’s ‘only’ your mental health on the line in your eyes, you dismiss it as if that’s not equally as important 💔

You matter. If there’s anything I want you to take from this video. It’s that. You matter.

Like… must you do that? 🫪 feels like we’re fighting fire half the time and it shouldn’t be this hard.

“Just say no.”

Easy. When you’re used to it.

Not everyone is.

But advocating for yourself in labour doesn’t require a personality transplant. We can start with three sentences.

“Why is it you recommend that?”
“How urgently does it need done?”
“We’re going to take 5 minutes.”

Not one of them is rude. Every one of them buys you information and time, which is exactly what informed consent actually is. And you don’t even have to be the one asking. That’s what your birth partner is there for. Advocating on your behalf when you don’t feel able!

That’s what birth preparation should be doing. Thinking about the things you’ll struggle with, before they become a problem during birth, and giving you tools to help make them less of an issue.
