Your core muscles play an important role in almost everything you do.

Building core strength is one of the most effective ways to help prevent and manage back pain. By strengthening the deep muscles of the abdomen, pelvis, and lower back, you can improve spinal support, reduce strain on surrounding structures, and lower the risk of future injuries.

If you are experiencing back pain or are unsure where to start with core exercises, an osteopath can help. Osteopaths are trained to assess the body’s structure and movement patterns, identifying areas of weakness, restriction, or imbalance that may be contributing to pain and dysfunction.

A meniscal tear is a knee injury which can be caused suddenly, such as during sport or slowly through wear and tear. Symptoms can vary depending on the type and severity of the tear.

Osteopathic treatment can be useful as part of the recovery process. It can help reduce muscle tension around the knee, hip and lower leg and improve joint mobility and movement. Your osteopath can also give you advice on rehab exercises.

Monday 12 October is World Arthritis day.

The theme this year is "Achieve Your Dreams" reflecting a broader movement to shift perceptions of arthritis from a limiting condition to one that can be managed with the right resources and awareness.

Arthritis affects over 350 million people globally and is a leading cause of disability.
Many forms of arthritis are chronic, painful, and often misunderstood or overlooked.

Our osteopaths are trained to manage arthritis by helping to stretch and improve the mobility of affected joints, adjust your posture, and possibly advise on pain relief or natural supplements.

Their expertise complements medical treatments and empowers people to manage arthritis more effectively. In severe cases, they will support applications for surgery such as hip or knee replacements, especially if the condition is affecting your ability to work or to be independent.

Running has many health benefits but it can also take its toll on the body, with runners commonly suffering from a range of injuries.

Runners frequently encounter specific challenges, such as joint pain, overuse injuries, sprains, and strains.

Osteopaths view the body as a whole, addressing the symptoms as well as the root cause. One of the fundamental advantages of osteopathy lies in its ability to assess and treat the entire musculoskeletal system, promoting balance and preventing future issues.

Daylight saving starts again this weekend. Don't forget to "spring forward" all your clocks.

Unfortunately, it can also be the time for allergies to become worse. Allergic reactions begin in the immune system resulting in inflammation to the skin, sinuses, airways or digestive system.

Osteopathy uses gentle manual therapy and physical manipulation to help relieve respiratory and sinus symptoms related to seasonal allergies like hay fever.

Through sinus drainage techniques and cranial osteopathy, combined with self-massage, osteopaths can help alleviate congestion, sinus pressure, and discomfort associated with allergies.

Maori Language Week runs from 14th to 20th September.

Ngā Mātanga Wheua translates to osteopath or "bone expert".
Physiotherapy translates to haumanu korikori in te reo Māori.
Kairorohau is the Māori word for chiropractor.

All three modalities require four to five years of training to become qualified and enable the practitioners to assess, diagnose and treat a wide range of injuries and illness. They are also trained to recognise when an issue requires further referral to a medical provider. They are all governed by membership of professional bodies.

Whiplash is a neck injury caused by forceful, rapid back-and-forth snapping of the neck. Symptoms include neck pain, stiffness, headaches, and dizziness.

Our osteopaths regularly treat patients suffering from whiplash and can offer treatment that aims to reduce pain and inflammation, and restore mobility and function throughout the body.

Osteopathy helps treat whiplash by using gentle, hands-on techniques to reduce muscle tension, improve spinal mobility, and ease pain.

Rehabilitation exercises often form an important part of the treatment plan. These can include muscle stretching and strengthening.

To get treatment for whiplash or any other neck injuries, call us on 03 355 6166 or book online at osteo.co.nz
