You've got your bag packed, your playlists downloaded, and your backup charger ready.

But what about your head?

Because the gear is the easy part.

The mental game is what separates a doula who feels confident in the room from one who's second-guessing every move when labor picks up.

Here's what I mentally run through before every birth I support:

1. If you don't know what to say, don't say anything. Hold her hand.
Silence is not awkward. Silence with presence is powerful. You don't need to fill every space with words.

2. There is no such thing as a wasted contraction.
Every single one is doing something. Even the ones that don't feel productive. Remind yourself of that when labor stalls or shifts.

3. Check in with yourself, not just your client.
Are you hydrated? Have you eaten? Do you need to step out for 60 seconds to reset? You can't pour from an empty cup.

4. Stay curious, not reactive.
When the energy in the room shifts or a care provider walks in with new information, take a breath. Ask questions. Don't jump to conclusions or let your own birth beliefs take over.

Your mental prep matters just as much as your physical prep.

Save this post to review before your next client call.

I've watched this happen more times than I can count.

An aspiring doula picks the cheapest training she can find, sits through hours of slides, gets her certificate, and then freezes the first time she walks into a birth room.

She doesn't know what to say.

She doesn't know where to stand.

She's overwhelmed by training options and now she's overwhelmed in the one moment that matters most.

Here's what I tell every single person who asks me about doula training:

Price is not the problem.

The problem is picking a program that teaches you theory but never puts you in a room where you practice holding space during a contraction.

The problem is learning birth positions from a diagram instead of physically supporting someone through them.

The problem is thinking a certificate means you're ready when you've never actually said the words out loud, never held a laboring person's hand, never felt that moment when you don't know what to say so you just breathe with them.

I can do anything for one minute.

That's what I teach.

But you have to practice it before the birth room, not during it.

After more than 30 years in this work, I've seen the doulas who thrive and the ones who quit after their first birth.

The difference is never the price of their training.

It's whether they practiced the skills that matter before they needed them.

If you're an aspiring doula who needs a clear starting point, save this.

After over 30 years, I've seen exactly what makes a birth worker truly confident.

And it's not what most people think.

It's not another certification.

It's not the perfect birth bag or another laminated checklist.

It's the moment you stop trying to know everything and start trusting what you already know.

I see so many doulas who have no direction, scrambling from training to training, thinking the next one will finally make them feel ready.

But confidence doesn't come from more credentials.

It comes from standing at a birth and knowing that if you don't know what to say, you don't say anything. You hold her hand.

It comes from understanding that there is no such thing as a wasted contraction.

It comes from believing that you can do anything for one minute.

These aren't things you learn in a manual.

They're things you learn when you stop chasing certainty and start showing up with presence.

That's the real secret.

You think birth education is all about breathing.

It's really about knowing your options when things don't go to plan.

I've been doing this for more than 30 years, and I can tell you the families who feel most confident aren't the ones who practiced their breathing the most.

They're the ones who knew what questions to ask when their provider said the words "we need to change course."

They're the ones who understood their choices when labor slowed down or sped up faster than expected.

They're the ones who didn't feel blindsided when the birth they planned looked different than the birth they had.

Because here's what nobody tells you: birth rarely goes exactly to plan.

And that's not scary when you're educated.

That's empowering.

Breathing techniques matter. They absolutely do.

But what matters more is walking into that room knowing you have a voice, knowing your options, and knowing how to advocate for yourself and your baby when the unexpected happens.

That's what real birth education looks like.

It's not fear-based. It's not gatekeeping information until you're in the moment and it's too late.

It's honest, compassionate, and it gives you the confidence to make decisions that are right for you and your family.

That's what I've been teaching for three decades.

I've heard it a hundred times.

"My partner was useless during labor."

And I get it.

But here's the truth most people don't want to hear: your partner wasn't useless because they didn't care.

They were useless because nobody taught them what to do.

I've been doing this for more than 30 years, and I can tell you that most birth partners walk into that room terrified.

They love you. They want to help. But they freeze because they have no idea what's helpful and what's annoying.

So here's what I teach:

âś… Specific counter-pressure moves (exactly where to press, how hard)
âś… What to say during transition (and what NOT to say)
âś… How to advocate with medical staff without being the difficult partner
âś… When to offer water, when to shut up, when to call the nurse
âś… How to read your body language so they know what you need before you have to ask

Your partner can be your biggest asset in that room.

But only if someone shows them how.

Comment 'LABOR PREP' and I'll send you my free guide on getting you and your partner ready for your labor.

After attending more than 1000 births, I always tell new doulas this one thing.

It's not about memorizing every comfort measure.

It's not about knowing the perfect thing to say at every moment.

It's about being present.

Here's what I mean.

Your client doesn't need you to fix her labor.

She doesn't need you to have all the answers.

She needs you to stay calm when she's overwhelmed.

She needs you to hold space when things don't go as planned.

She needs you to believe in her body's ability to do this when she's doubting herself.

I can do anything for one minute.

That's what I tell laboring women, and that's what I tell doulas who have no direction.

You don't need to be perfect.

You need to be steady.

You need to trust the process.

And you need to remember that there is no such thing as a wasted contraction.

Every single one is doing something, even when it doesn't feel like progress.

Your role is to remind her of that.

To hold her hand when you don't know what to say.

To be the calm in the room.

That's the real secret to doula success.

Not your certification.

Not how many births you've attended.

It's your ability to be fully present with another human in one of the most vulnerable moments of her life.

That's what women remember.

That's what changes everything.

I've been doing this for over 30 years.

And let me tell you something most doula trainings won't.

Being a doula isn't about birth plans and pretty affirmations.

It's about showing up when a woman is feeling unprepared for birth and terrified.

It's about holding space when she's overwhelmed and doesn't know what she needs.

It's about staying calm when the plan falls apart.

It's about saying nothing and just holding her hand when words won't help.

Because I can do anything for one minute. And that's what I teach her, too.

One contraction at a time. One breath at a time.

The messy parts? That's where the real work happens.

That's where you earn the trust.

That's where you become the doula she'll remember for the rest of her life.

If you're tired of feeling lost in your doula practice, follow for real birth education that doesn't sugarcoat the work. đź’›

After 30 years in birth work, I've seen thousands of parents walk into their birth experience.

The ones who felt most confident?

They knew how to breathe through contractions.

Not just deep breathing.

I'm talking about breathing that works WITH your body, that helps you manage intensity, that keeps you present instead of panicking.

Because here's the truth: you can do anything for one minute.

And birth is just a series of one-minute moments.

When you know how to breathe through each contraction, you stay grounded.

You feel capable.

You realize your body knows exactly what to do, and you're working together.

That's what real birth education looks like.

Not fear-based information.

Not vague reassurances.

Just honest, practical tools that help you feel prepared.

You think being a doula is about knowing all the perfect comfort measures.

It's about how you show up when nothing works.

I've been in this work for over 30 years, and I've seen every kind of birth.

The quiet ones. The loud ones. The ones where every technique you learned in training works beautifully.

And the ones where nothing does.

That's when you find out what kind of doula you really are.

Because here's the truth: the families who remember you, the ones who tell their friends about you, the ones who write you cards years later , they're not remembering the hip squeeze that saved the day.

They're remembering that you stayed calm when they lost it.

That you held space when they felt like giving up.

That you didn't panic when the plan fell apart.

If you don't know what to say, don't say anything. Hold her hand.

That's the work.

Not the perfect counterpressure.

Not the essential oil blend.

Not the breathing pattern you memorized.

It's your ability to be present in the hardest moments without needing to fix them.

To trust the process when it looks nothing like what you expected.

To ground the room with your steady presence instead of scrambling for the next thing to try.

That confidence doesn't come from knowing more techniques.

It comes from understanding birth on a deeper level.

From having a framework that helps you read what's actually happening instead of just reacting.

From real education that prepares you for the messy, unpredictable, beautiful reality of this work.

Comment "GUIDE" and I'll send you my free doula resource that will help you show up with that kind of confidence.
