On April 1, Medicare payments for essential life-saving services, including routine cancer screenings like mammograms, are set to be cut AGAIN if Congress doesn’t act.

It is estimated additional $35 billion of cuts could be initiated early next year if lawmakers don’t waive “Pay as You Go” (PAYGO) requirements.

Tell Congress to act today by extending the sequestration moratorium through the end of the year and avoid an additional, significant reduction due to PAYGO rules.

Today, we are celebrating Elizabeth Fleischman (1867-1905).

Elizabeth broke through many boundaries of her time, paving the way for others in the medical field. Additionally, she was a pioneer in x-ray technology, contributing to its growth during its infancy. She was born in California to Jewish immigrants from Austria. In 1882, she dropped out of high school to support her family. She later became interested in Wilhelm Röntgen's breakthrough with x-rays in Vienna, Austria.

Despite unjust obstacles due to her gender, race and social status, she pursued her interest with x-rays, bringing good to the world in the process. In 1896, she enrolled in the Van der Naillen School of Engineering in San Francisco and took a course of study in electrical science. One year later, she opened the first X-ray laboratory in California. Her passion quickly led her to become known as one of the most expert radiogaphers in the United States at that time.

During the Spanish-American war of 1898, wounded soldiers who had been in battle in the Philippine Islands were brought to San Francisco. Elizabeth used X-rays to locate bullets and shell-splinters in soldier’s bodies to help surgeons remove them.
