👻 Happy Halloween! 🎃

A gentle, seasonal reminder: kids don't owe anyone physical affection, even in a fun costume, even for a photo, even for grandma.

"Give them a hug" and "say thank you with a kiss" teaches kids that their comfort is negotiable if the adult asking is persistent enough. Consent isn't something to wait to start teaching at sixteen, it starts now, in the small moments, including trick-or-treat night.

If your child wants a fist bump instead of a hug, a wave instead of a photo, or space instead of an itchy costume, that's not rude or a lack of resiliency; that's a kid learning to trust their own body.

However you're celebrating today, or not celebrating at all, we hope it's safe and fun!

Some adoptees didn't get to tell their story.

Today we remember them. 💙

On Adoptee Remembrance Day, the adoptee community honors adoptees who have died, including those lost to su***de, to abuse, to neglect, and to the harms of systems that were supposed to protect them.

Adoptee loss rarely gets a public place to land. Many of us carry people we never met, and people we lost too soon, while the culture around adoption tends to move quickly toward celebration. Today we slow down. We remember adoptees whose names we know, adoptees whose names were never recorded, and the ones whose grief went unheard until it was too late.

If today feels heavy, you don't have to carry it alone or explain why. If you are struggling, call or text 988 at any hour. If you love an adoptee, reach out today without an agenda, just to say you're thinking of them.

Today is National Day of the Deployed, honoring service members currently deployed and the families holding everything together while they're gone.

With Grand Forks Air Force Base right in our community, deployment isn't a distant concept but the empty chair at dinner. It's a spouse managing the household solo, a kid navigating a school year with one parent physically present, a family living on a time difference and a countdown.

The mental health toll of deployment doesn't belong only to the service member. It belongs to everyone waiting for them to come home, and they deserve support too.

If you are a military family navigating deployment, reintegration, or the complicated in-between, you don't have to carry that alone.

"High-functioning" and "low-functioning" are labels that tell you nothing useful about a person.

Functioning labels flatten real, complex people into a single word that often says more about a system's convenience than about the individual.

Someone with Down syndrome might need significant support in one area of life and be entirely independent in another, which is *not* a contradiction. That's what being a whole, complicated person looks like, for everyone, disabled or not.

Support should be built around what a person actually needs, not around a label that decides their worth or potential before you've even gotten to know them.

A quick mindfulness moment: pause right now and notice five things you can hear. Don't judge them, don't analyze them, just notice.

That small exercise is a piece of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, a modality we use at Dachtler Therapy. Mindfulness gets misunderstood a lot. It's not about achieving some perfectly calm, empty-minded state. It's about noticing what's actually happening, in your body and your environment, without immediately trying to fix or judge it.

For folks managing anxiety, trauma responses, or a mind that never seems to slow down, mindfulness offers a way back to the present moment, one small, imperfect breath at a time.

Closing out ADHD Awareness Month with a reality a lot of adults live but rarely say out loud: masking is exhausting, and it doesn't erase the ADHD underneath it.

Many adults, especially women and people who were never evaluated as children, spend years compensating, overpreparing, and working twice as hard just to look like they're keeping up. The effort is invisible to everyone except the person doing it, which means it rarely gets credit and often gets punished the moment it slips.

If you were told you were "too much" or "not enough" for most of your life and you're now wondering if ADHD explains some of it, that's worth exploring. Late diagnosis doesn't mean you missed your chance to understand yourself. It means you're understanding yourself now.

October is Blind Awareness Month, a time to recognize the experiences of people who are blind or have low vision, and the barriers they meet in a world designed almost entirely around sight.

Here in Grand Forks, many of us have driven past the vibrant mural at North Dakota Vision Services, School for the Blind, near UND. Artist Trey Everett painted it to raise public awareness of the services the school provides and to brighten the day for everyone passing by. Its story carries a message that reaches well beyond one building. The mural included a rainbow, and that alone drew a complaint. What followed was a wave of community support: people wrote letters, shared photos, and insisted that visibility for blind and low vision services was worth protecting despite someone's misinterpretation. The community showed up loudly for something meant to make disability more visible instead of less.

That same spirit belongs to Blind Awareness Month. Access shouldn’t be something a person has to fight for, whether it looks like documents a screen reader can actually read, large print, a clear description of an unfamiliar space, or a provider who asks what works instead of guessing. It should be the standard, defended as loudly as this community defended a mural.

If you are blind or have low vision and have struggled to find mental health care that meets you fully, you deserve better than what you’ve likely experienced.

It's time we shift the focus where it belongs.

"Why didn't they just leave?" puts the burden on the survivor and ignores everything working against them: financial control, fear for their safety or their children's safety, threats, isolation from support systems, and the fact that leaving is statistically the most dangerous time in an abusive relationship.

A better question: "What was standing in their way, and how do we remove those barriers?"

If you are supporting someone in an abusive relationship, your patience and non-judgment matter more than urging them to leave on your timeline. If you are the one in it, you are not weak, and you are not making excuses. You are surviving something that was never simple to begin with. Please note the resources available below:

Happy Indigenous Peoples Day!

Grand Forks takes its name from "Les Grandes Fourches," what French fur traders called the meeting point of the Red River and the Red Lake River, but that confluence was a gathering place for Ojibwe and Dakota peoples for generations before any European trader arrived, used for fishing, trade, and community long before it had a French or English name attached to it.

That history doesn't stay in the past as Grand Forks sits on the ancestral and treaty lands of the Pembina and Red Lake Bands of Ojibwe and the Dakota Oyate, including community members within Red Lake, Turtle Mountain, White Earth Bands, and Dakota Tribes of Minnesota and North Dakota. Indigenous communities continue to carry the weight of forced removal, boarding schools, and generational trauma, alongside resilience, sovereignty, and living culture that predates this city by centuries.

Today is for honoring that history accurately, not just acknowledging it in passing. If you're interested in learning more, check out our blogpost: https://www.dachtlertherapy.com/blog/z9xrxap4vmurfans2y0fmj2tzokd6e

Happy National Coming Out Day! Coming out isn't a one-time announcement - It's the doctor's office intake form, the new job, the extended family gathering. It's deciding, again and again, whether a space is safe enough to be fully yourself in.

If you came out today, this year, or twenty years ago, and if you haven't come out at all because it isn't safe to yet, all of that is valid. Your timeline belongs to you.

At Dachtler Therapy, affirming care means you never have to come out to us in order to be fully supported. We start from the assumption that you already are exactly who you say you are.
