Winter weather can complicate the ride to dialysis. As we head into November, take a few minutes to review your transportation plan.
Save your clinic’s phone number, check that your care team has your current contact information, and discuss a backup plan with the person or service you rely on for rides. If weather may prevent you from getting to treatment, contact your dialysis clinic promptly for instructions.
Family members and support people can help with these preparations, too.
Save this post and review your ride plan before winter weather arrives.

Ever think of a question after you have already left the clinic? Keep a short list in a notebook or on your phone to bring to your next dialysis treatment.
You might ask: • Who should I contact with questions between treatments? • Can you explain a term I keep hearing? • Who can help me discuss how dialysis fits into my daily routine?
Start with the question that matters most to you. Families and support people can help write questions down, too.

Planning a trip while on dialysis

If you’re hoping to visit family or get away for a few days, talk with your dialysis team early. Treatments at another clinic need to be arranged in advance, and appointment times can fill up around the holidays.

Start planning six to eight weeks ahead when possible, allowing more time for busy travel periods. Your dialysis team can help coordinate the records and treatment information needed by the clinic you’ll be visiting.

For those planning a visit to Grand Forks, call Aurora Dialysis at 701-757-5700 to ask about treatment availability and arrangements.

Please share with friends or family who may be planning a visit.

Dialysis helps people with kidney failure keep doing the things they enjoy. Many people receiving treatment work, travel, garden, spend time with their grandchildren, and stay involved in their communities.

There are different ways to receive dialysis, including treatment in a center or at home. A care team helps each person understand their options and fit treatment into their life.

At Aurora Dialysis, we’re proud to care for our patients and support their goals. Knowing what someone enjoys and what they’re looking forward to matters to us, because those things matter to the person we’re caring for.

Have a friend or family member on dialysis? A specific offer of help can make it easier for them to say yes.

Here are a few ways to start:

• “Can I help with a ride to treatment this week?”

• “I’m going to the store. What can I pick up for you?”

• “I’d love to spend time together. What day works around your treatments?”

• “Just checking in. No need to reply if you’re resting.”

Keep inviting them to things. Ask about their hobbies, their family, and whatever they’ve been watching lately. Let them tell you what would help.

What’s a small act of kindness you’ve appreciated? Tell us in the comments. Your idea might help someone else.

Share this with someone who wants to support a loved one on dialysis.
