So what is Dry Needling? Dry needling is a technique our physical therapists use for the treatment of pain and impairments. The technique uses a "dry" needle, one without medication or injection, inserted through the skin into areas of the muscle.

Physical therapists use dry needling to release or inactivate trigger points to relieve pain or improve range of motion. This is one technique the NSMI physical therapists use as part of your treatment plan.

ATC Tyler is preparing a PRP injection. So...What Is Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP)?

Many famous athletes — Tiger Woods, tennis star Rafael Nadal, and several others — have received PRP for various problems, such as sprained knees and chronic tendon injuries.

Although blood is mainly a liquid (called plasma), it also contains small solid components (red cells, white cells, and platelets.) The platelets are best known for their importance in clotting blood. However, platelets also contain hundreds of proteins called growth factors which are very important in the healing of injuries.

PRP is plasma with many more platelets than what is typically found in blood. The concentration of platelets — and, thereby, the concentration of growth factors — can be 5 to 10 times greater (or richer) than usual.

To develop a PRP preparation, blood must first be drawn from a patient. The platelets are separated from other blood cells and their concentration is increased during a process called centrifugation. Then the increased concentration of platelets is combined with the remaining blood. https://orthoinfo.aaos.org/en/treatment/platelet-rich-plasma-prp/

Meet The Team Tuesday!

Say hello to Lee Ann Skinner, M.S. LAT, ATC, CSCS, OTC

I am certified athletic trainer with continuous professional experience in the field of sports medicine since 2001. I have an undergraduate degree in Athletic Training from Radford University and graduate degree in Sports Medicine from the @UnitedStatesSportsAcademy.

My career has involves sports medicine care in the secondary school setting, youth league sports, and orthopedic clinical setting. While not in clinic at NSMI, I am busy in the community through Loudoun County Public School athletics and performance training.

Volunteer sports medicine coverage for professional sport, nationally recognized race events, and injury prevention outreaches are key experiences as a health care provider in the athletic population.

I help athletes meet performance goals at any level of competition via rehabilitation, return to play, periodization and tapering techniques.

My personal pursuits in wellness via recreational and trained courses in Ballet, Pilates, Yoga, weight training and metabolic conditioning are reflected in my patient care.

I am currently in 200 hour Vinyasa yoga teacher training and have plans for nutrition certification. I have a desire to help other’s lifestyle choices through wellness education, nutritional coaching, exercise prescription, and behavior modification so they can find, maintain or grow the athlete within.

I work at NSMI to learn from the best in orthopedic sports medicine so I can give my best.

Hope to see you on the field, Lee Ann

PRESS RELEASE
The National Sports Medicine Institute Partners with Ashburn Xtreme
Hockey Club
An annual partnership to Benefit Youth Athletes through Sports Medicine

Lansdowne, VA – The National Sports Medicine Institute (NSMI) has partnered with the Ashburn Xtreme Ice Hockey club to provide orthopaedic and physical therapy care for their youth athletes. As their Official Sports Medicine partner, NSMI will provide access to highly trained sports medicine orthopaedic surgeons, as well as a team of sports medicine physical therapists and specialists.

The initiative is directed by Dr. Timothy Johnson and Ashburn Xtreme Executive Director and U16 AA I Head Coach, Gary Pouliot. “We want to provide the best care and easy access to our team at The National Sports Medicine Institute; not only in case of injury, but also for injury prevention and athletic performance recovery,” stated Dr. Johnson. “It is about ensuring that our youth athletes know how to remain fit, perform their best on the ice and return safely to sports after an injury.”

Executive Director Pouliot is passionate about pursuing health and wellness partnerships to for the club. “It is good sports management to connect with a sports-specific practice such as NSMI so each coach, athlete and parent knows that they have team of experts ready to provide care if there is an injury and also educate on ways to help prevent an injury from happening,” said Pouliot. The Ashburn Xtreme is a travel only program focused on skill development and high-level competition based out of the Ashburn Ice House.

The annual partnership begins December 1, 2018 and a parent/athlete meeting is being planned for early 2019.
