"How long will we need supervised visits?" It's one of the most common questions we hear.

The answer has two parts. Each visit follows your court order or referral, and at TTS visits are generally scheduled for up to two hours. How long supervision continues overall depends on your case and on decisions made by the court. There's no single timeline that fits every family, and TTS doesn't set it.

"What happens now?" Most parents ask this before their first supervised visit.

Here's the short answer. Parents check in at separate times, then parent and child spend time together in a kid-friendly room. That time might be drawing, a board game, reading, or just talking. A trained monitor keeps the visit safe and writes factual notes about what they observe. The monitor isn't there to judge parenting style.

What does a "good" first visit look like? It might not be a hug or a big smile, and that's OK.

After an early visit, more helpful questions are: Did the child feel emotionally safe? Did the parent stay calm when the child was quiet or hesitant? Did the child leave without feeling responsible for the parent's emotions?

Regulation before reconnection. Safety before closeness. In this article, our founder Monique Harris-Whitt, LCSW, explains why preparation isn't a delay. It's part of the process.

When a parenting schedule shifts, kids often feel it more than we expect, especially when other routines are changing at the same time.

You might notice more clinginess, trouble sleeping, or a shorter fuse around pickups and drop-offs. That usually doesn't mean the new schedule isn't working. It often means your child is adjusting to a lot of newness at once.

What helps:
• Keep handoffs calm, brief, and predictable
• Make one change at a time when you can
• Offer a low-pressure check-in, like a snack and a few minutes of undivided attention
• Give yourself and your child grace on the rough days

Our guide was written for back-to-school season, but the tips apply any time routines change: https://tts-nv.com/back-to-school-custody-schedule-changes/

Feeling nervous before your first supervised visit? That's completely normal, and you don't have to walk in unprepared.

A few things that help:
✔ Review your court order before intake so you know what it asks of you
✔ Bring a photo ID and any paperwork the office requested
✔ Pack a small snack and maybe a favorite book or comfort item
✔ Skip the big gifts. A calm, steady presence means more to a child than a large gesture

And if your child seems quiet at first, that's OK. Many children need a few minutes to warm up, and a slow start isn't a failed visit.

What's the difference between a supervised visit and a therapeutic supervised visit?

In standard supervised visitation, a trained monitor keeps the visit safe and documents what happens. In Therapeutic Supervised Visitation (TSV), a licensed therapist takes an active role. They coach the parent in the moment, help the child feel safe, and work at the child's pace toward healthier contact over time.

TSV is often a good fit when a child feels anxious or hesitant, after a long separation, or when a parent wants guidance on reconnecting after a hard season. The goal isn't only safety. It's repair.

For many families, the hardest moment of the week isn't the visit. It's the handoff.

A safe (monitored) custody exchange takes the conflict out of that moment. A trained staff member manages the transition, parents arrive and leave at separate times so they don't cross paths, and your child moves from one home to the other in a calm, predictable setting.

Safe exchanges can help when a court order calls for a neutral third party, when direct contact between parents isn't a good idea, or when you just want the transition to feel easier for your child. You don't need a "perfect history" to use one.

At The Therapeutic Solution, safe exchanges are available 7 AM-7 PM Monday through Friday, and on weekends by appointment.

Family healing is a process, not a single moment. ❤️
When family relationships have been strained, reunification therapy may provide structured support to help families work through challenges, improve communication, and explore healthier ways to reconnect.

For court-involved families, understanding how the process works—and when it may be appropriate—can help set clearer expectations. Every family’s journey is different, and progress depends on individual needs and readiness.

A child can have more than one feeling at the same time. ❤️

During family reconnection, a child might feel excited, nervous, hopeful, angry, or unsure—and those feelings can change from one visit to the next.
Children don’t always need to be encouraged to “feel better.” Sometimes, they need the freedom to express what they’re feeling without pressure or judgment.

At TTS, we believe creating space for a child’s emotions can support a more safe, respectful, and trauma-informed reconnection process.
