Milan & Dummer EMS Celebrating dedication, bravery, and service in our region. 💙

It was an honor to join the North Country Public Safety Annual Awards tonight to recognize our incredible peers and colleagues. Thank you to the Governor for presenting awards to tonight's inspiring recipients.
Beyond the celebration, having state government and public safety leadership in the room gave us a powerful platform to advocate directly for the resources and needs of our community.

Working together to keep the North Country safe and strong!

The investigation into the origin and cause of the fire is ongoing.

NEWS RELEASE: 1 PERSON DECEASED, 1 SERIOUSLY HURT AFTER HOUSE FIRE IN STARK

STARK, N.H. – New Hampshire State Fire Marshal Sean P. Toomey and Stark Fire Chief Colin Wentworth announce that one person is deceased, and another is hospitalized following a house fire.

Just before 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, 2026, an adult female resident of 37 Montgomery Road in Stark reported a fire at the home to a neighbor, who called 911. Dispatchers learned that one person was still inside the home, as flames were spreading. A neighbor attempted to enter the burning home to rescue the remaining occupant, an adult male, but was unable to do so due to the growing fire. When firefighters arrived a few minutes later, the house was fully involved, with flames coming out of the doors and windows. Firefighters later reported they were unable to immediately enter the home due to the worsening conditions.

Additional firefighters from Milan and Groveton responded to assist. Station coverage was provided by members of the Lancaster and Berlin fire departments.

After the fire was ultimately brought under control around 4:30 a.m., the adult male and two dogs were found deceased in the home. The surviving victim was airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The identity of the deceased victim is being withheld pending an autopsy scheduled for Monday, Oct. 19, 2026, at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The New Hampshire State Fire Marshal's Office responded to the scene and assumed the lead of the investigation into the origin and cause of the fire. At this time, the fire is not considered suspicious, and investigators believe a wood stove inside the home was a primary factor. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact investigators at (603) 223-4289 or [email protected].

State Fire Marshal Toomey reminds all Granite Staters of the importance of proper maintenance and annual cleanings of wood-burning appliances and chimneys. Keep combustible materials at least three to five feet away from any heating appliance, always properly dispose of wood stove ash, and ensure pathways inside and outside the home are maintained and clear.

No further information is available at this time.

Early this morning Milan & Dummer EMS was requested mutual aid to Stark for a reported building fire.

Ambulance Two responded at the BLS level along with our ALS Duty Officer to coordinate resources.

Due to the needs of firefighter rehab along with the cold temperatures, Ambulance One was also dispatched.

Milan & Dummer EMS units evaluated several fire fighters and one was ultimately transported by our colleagues at Groveton Ambulance as a precaution.

Thank you to our colleagues at Milan Fire Department, Stark Volunteer Fire Department Association, Groveton Fire, and Groveton Ambulance who attended last night's incident.

This morning, the first Emergency Medical Technician class ever hosted by Milan & Dummer EMS kicked off and was instructed by a number our members who are NH Fire Academy trained and licensed EMS instructors.

While a number of students will accept offers of employment by our agency post licensure and completion of the program, a number of others are here on behalf of outside agencies.

This course follows the separate completion of two Emergency Medical Responder courses we held over the last 12 months and happens just ahead of our first AEMT program to be held this coming spring.

Yesterday afternoon, Milan & Dummer EMS was dispatched for a reported patient with CPR in progress.

Our Duty Crew responded in Ambulance Two from our station staffed at the Paramedic Level.

Due to the severity of the reported call, our backup crew, off duty members, Milan Fire Department and Berlin NH Police Department were also dispatched bringing additional responders to the scene, some of whom were already in the area prior to the call.

Milan & Dummer EMS responded with:
(1) Paramedic
(1) AEMT
(1) EMR
(2) EMT's

Milan Fire Department responded with several EMS trained members including several members of our recent EMR class.

It is complex and high acuity calls like this one that emphasize the the important of a coordinated response.

Thank you to our members, on and off duty along with our mutual aid partners at Milan Fire Department and Berlin NH Police Department who responded to assist.

Yesterday evening Milan & Dummer EMS was dispatched for a reported stroke patient. Our duty crew immediately responded and requested dispatch put out a tone for available in town Advanced Life Support members to sign on respond.

A total of three ALS members including our ALS Duty Officer responded to the scene to assist the duty crew.

The patient was subsequently transported to AVH for additional evaluation and treatment.

Several years ago, our organization would have struggled to put together even just the two person duty crew to respond to a call like this and would have replied upon mutual aid for the Advanced Life Support request. Yesterday that request was fulfilled entirely by available off duty members and an on duty supervisor.

In February of next year we will host our very first Advanced EMT class to allow some of our long serving members to upgrade their licenses and become ALS providers.

Thank you to our members who were off duty for responding, and to our partners at Milan Fire Department for their support with yesterday's call.

We were honored to welcome Aarron R. Dupuis, NBRC State Program Manager for the Division of Economic Development (NH Department of Business and Economic Affairs), to our station today!

Mr. Dupuis visited to officially present Milan & Dummer Ambulance Service with a certificate of recognition for our Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC) Catalyst Grant.

This vital grant award is already making a direct impact in our community. It has allowed us to significantly expand our workforce development program—training a new cohort of EMS providers and supporting paid, on-the-job training through our mentorship program once students graduate and become licensed. The grant has further supported our in station staffing program where Milan & Dummer EMS crews (made up of a Senior Preceptor and newly licensed provider) staff our station to provide a faster response to medical emergencies within the coverage area.

Representing our agency at today’s visit were:

Alex Fuchs, Chief

Roger Boissonneau, Assistant Chief

Eric Demers, Board Chair

Jason Huter, Co-Board Chair

In addition to celebrating the grant, our team had a productive discussion with Mr. Dupuis regarding our current program rollout and explored future opportunities for how the NH Department of Business and Economic Affairs can help support and strengthen emergency medical services across the North Country.

We extend our sincere thanks to the NBRC and the NHBEA for their continued partnership and investment in the future of North Country healthcare.
