In late 2019, VDAF Executive Director Tara Quinn chatted with Dr. Carrington Crawford of Lynchburg Dental Center about his decision to make a long term commitment to the VDAF and its mission to provide access to dental care to Virginia’s underserved. Read the interview here >>

Q: What led you to decide to support the VDAF’s access to dental care programs?
⭐ I really became aware of the need for affordable and accessible dental care in Virginia during my time in dental school at the VCU School of Dentistry. I volunteered as a student at MOM projects, and really felt fulfilled using my skills to care for the underserved.
With a young family and a dental practice, it is really hard for me to come to MOM projects now, unfortunately, but I do volunteer about every 6-8 weeks at the free clinic in Lynchburg. Dr. Dustin Reynolds and I have also begun sponsoring the volunteer cookout at the Wise MOM project in July.
Q: What made you choose a long-term commitment to supporting the VDAF through monthly giving?
⭐ It can be hard for many of us to think of writing a single big check all at once, but monthly giving makes it easy. You don’t even miss it! I expect to be working in dentistry for another 25 years; so with my monthly donations, I can make a real impact on helping people get access to care this way. It’s really a no-brainer!
Q: Why did you decide to support the VDAF in this way?
⭐ I believe in the VDAF and what it does and want to try to support it in any way I can. It’s a simple as that. With monthly giving, I just made the pledge and my credit card is automatically debited each month; it’s so easy! I just want to see the VDAF continue the work it is doing now, and this is a way I can help.

It is an honor that we are able to provide care for U.S. Veterans. This vet was able to receive care through our Donated Dental Services (DDS) program - read his story:

Mr. W D was a 49 year old disabled veteran with renal disease from Arlington, VA when we connected him with Dr. Elizabeth Shaeffer. Dr. Shaeffer and Dr. Jay Bukzin (oral surgeon) were able to provide him with a full upper denture, a crown, and added a tooth to his existing partial denture for a total of $11,405 worth of work!

We appreciate and are so thankful for our veterans (and the DDS dentists who care for them) today and every day. 🇺🇸🗽❤️

We caught up with one of our monthly donors, Dr. Scott Miller, and wanted to find out why he chooses to support VDAF ⬇️

Q: What led you to decide to support the VDAF’s access to dental care programs?
A: Growing up in SWVA I have seen the effects of poverty and lack of dental care. Some 17 years ago, Dr. Terry Dickinson asked me to treat a MOM patient that needed an obturator (an oral prosthesis to replace his missing teeth and hard palate). I treated that patient in my private office but meet him at the Wise Fairgrounds the next year. The lines were overwhelming and seeing people I knew in those lines made me realize the need even more.

Q: What made you choose a long-term commitment to supporting the VDAF through monthly giving?
A: There is no way the need can be meet without people willing to donate time and money to restore these lost smiles. When a person cannot smile they lose much more. They often eat softer foods higher in sugar content that leads to increased diabetes and obesity. A small monetary commitment can bring smiles back. When a person can smile they have more confidence to re-enter the work force. A donation to the VDAF can result in restoring a person’s hope for the future and their family.

25 Stories of Impact: Story # 19 Virginia Dental Association Foundation, 2020 CFDRR Competitive Grant Recipient According to VDAF: The overall goal of the Donated Dental Services (DDS) program, supported by a CFDRR grant, is to restore eligible seniors and adults with disabilities to good oral health. DDS matches them with volunteer dentists, specialists, and dental laboratories that provide comprehensive treatment free of charge in their private offices and clinics. Mr. WS is a 64-year-old male who suffers from Type II Diabetes, hypertension, and Stage 4 kidney disease. He is also the primary caregiver for his wife, who recently had brain surgery and requires full-time care. Life is quite challenging for Mr. WS, and caring for his dental needs through the DDS program has been a great relief to him. If you would like to financially support programs such as this, please contact our office or visit our website at www.cfdrr.org to discuss your donation options. #cfdrrstoriesofimpact #cfdrrcelebratingtwentyfiveyears

Hello members of the dental profession, We are graduate students from the University of South Florida’s College of Public Health, and we would appreciate your support by taking our survey in regard to oral sexual health. The purpose of this survey is to assess dental health providers' self efficacy and their ability to help fill the gap in sexual health knowledge by educating in regard to the orally transmitted disease, Human Papillomavirus (HPV). The survey will consist of short, multiple-choice questions about your practice with respect to HPV. The survey should take about five minutes to complete. Please answer all questions to the best of your ability. We greatly appreciate your time and commitment in helping us discover more pertinent information regarding oral sexual health.
