In 2011, my husband at the time was diagnosed with stage four cancer.
I remember sitting there thinking, I have to find something to be grateful for. So I picked up a pen and wrote it down.
I'm grateful for this cup of coffee.
I'm grateful for the yellow bird outside my window.
I'm grateful for the sunshine coming through the glass.
It sounds so simple. Maybe even a little silly. But it began to shift my brain from worrying all the time, seeing only the bad and bracing for the next thing to go wrong, to seeing a way forward. It helped me cope.
That's not just a feel-good idea. It's how your brain works. When your nervous system is stuck in survival mode, it narrows your focus to threat. Gratitude gives it a signal of safety, and a calm brain can see possibilities again.
If you're feeling overwhelmed right now, I made something for you. The Overwhelm Reset is a free guide with the three practices I still use every single day:
🌅 Morning Gratitude: my simple 3-step practice
🌿 Calm Mind Minutes™: one-minute resets for when overwhelm hits
🌙 The Perfect Day Practice™: a few quiet minutes before sleep
Your brain isn't broken. It's overwhelmed. And the brain can change at any age.
