Vision: To restore hope and sight. Fighting Blindness Canada (FBC) is Canada’s leading private funder of vision research.

We offer hope to Canadians by identifying the best, most promising research that is driving treatments and cures for blinding eye diseases, and by raising and stewarding funds to support this essential, sight-saving research. Over our 45-year history, we have invested over $40 million to support vision research and education across Canada: that’s over 200 research grants that have led to over 600 new discoveries in areas such as stem cell research, neuroprotective therapies, technological developments, pharmaceuticals, and gene therapies. All of the research and educational initiatives we fund, support our goals of understanding why vision loss occurs, how it can be slowed or stopped, and how sight can be restored.

“I want the art to speak for itself more than the person.”

For Ottawa musician Lucas Haneman, music takes centre stage. Living with significant vision loss hasn’t stopped him from building an international music career as a guitarist, singer-songwriter and recording engineer.

Alongside his wife and musical partner, Megan Laurence, Lucas performs with The Blind & The Beautiful, an acoustic blues and roots duo. He’s also looking ahead to what advances in vision research and accessible technology may make possible.

On November 5, Lucas brings his music and story to Fighting Blindness Canada’s Unite for Sight—an evening celebrating the vision loss community and raising funds for vision research. 💙
