What a fantastic day at the Aged Care Catering Summit in Brisbane last Monday!

Nutrition Professionals Australia Director, Julie Dundon, joined Tawnya Bahr, Emma Lillie and Caylie Field on a panel to discuss how the transformation in residential aged care is creating positive experiences through better food, smarter kitchens and stronger teams. Thank you to our fellow panellists for such an engaging conversation, and to everyone who came along.

Liz Kearins also gave an impressive keynote and left us with the message: pull up a chair to really listen to our residents. It’s a simple idea, but one that sits at the heart of great food and dining in aged care.

Managing diabetes in aged care is about understanding how food, medication, exercise, and illness all work together for older residents, not just what's on the plate.

With overly restrictive menus increasing the risk of malnutrition without improving blood glucose control, understanding the right balance of what is required means a menu that works for every resident, including those with diabetes.

This November, we will be hosting our last FREE webinar of the year - M-Check: Menu and Mealtime Assessment Tool.

In this session, one of NPA's Accredited Practising Dietitians (APDs) will explore M-Check - NPA's Menu and Mealtime Assessment tool, and how it supports a compliant, practical and efficient assessment process for aged care providers.

We'll cover how an annual menu and mealtime assessment helps demonstrate meeting outcome 6.3 under the Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards, what M-Check involves and how it goes beyond a checklist, how to prepare for an onsite visit, how APDs capture and benchmark data and generate reports mapped to Standards 1–6, and the follow-up support available after an assessment.

Managing dysphagia comes down to a shared standard, consistent training, and knowing what to look for. That's where the IDDSI framework comes in - and why every member of the care team, from kitchen staff to personal care assistants, needs to understand it.

In our latest article, we break down why texture modification matters, how IDDSI removes the guesswork, and what staff training needs to cover to keep residents safe and well-nourished.
