A warm welcome to our newest team member Simi! Please read on to learn more about Simi and her role as paediatric physio.
1. What led you to work in paediatric physiotherapy/what inspired you?
At uni we had a special guest Paediatric Physiotherapist lecturer bring in buckets of toys and games, learning about play-based therapy and the importance of a Physiotherapists role in childhood development had me hooked.
2. Do you have any particular areas of interest in paediatric physiotherapy?
I’m particularly interested in helping children reach their age appropriate gross motor milestones and skill specific goals, so that they can achieve inclusion and participate amongst their peers to the best of their ability, whether that looks like tailoring intervention ideas for skills development in a way that is meaningful to the child, or modifying an environment to make participation more inclusive (or both!).
3. What do you enjoy about your role? What are some of the most rewarding moments?
The most rewarding part of my role is being able to create a safe space for my clients and their families, so that we can work together in a collaborative, judgement free and wholistic manner.
4. What is one thing you wish every client understood about the role of a physiotherapist?
Paediatric Physiotherapists are often working behind the scenes to make Physiotherapy meaningful and engaging to your child, whether that is designing a session based on your child's favourite TV show, creating a skills obstacle course with your child’s favourite toy at the forefront or researching the most evidence-based method of supporting your child in a sport-specific skill they wish to learn.
6. What is your favourite way to start your workday?
With an oat latte and a few pages of whatever book I am reading at the time. Then I always make sure I re-organise the toys I need for sessions.
7. What’s a book, podcast, or tool you currently recommend?
I have been enjoying 'The Healthy Child Pod',by two Physiotherapists named Jonny and Emma.
8. What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
You're braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.
