FAIR FUNDING FOR WA KIDS WITH TYPE 1 DIABETES 📝

In the wealthiest state in the nation, no child should be forced to manage a life-threatening condition alone.

But today, vital support for primary school students with type 1 diabetes is too often cut after Year 2.

This is an unfair, arbitrary cut-off that doesn’t take into account the complexity of managing this life-long and incurable condition.

I’m backing the campaign of Alana Marshall - an inspiring South West mum whose son Declan has type 1. They know how important this funding is and are fighting to lock it in for families across WA.

And people are listening - they’ve already garnered more than 1,200 signatures.

It’s long past time for the Cook Labor Government to scrap this outdated policy.

💙 A little reminder of how amazing our T1D community is 🩵🇦🇺

Over time, I’ve received (and still receive) so many messages from people asking if anyone nearby has spare diabetes supplies to help them get through until their local chemist or pharmacy opens the next day.

It might be an infusion set, a sensor, insulin pump supplies or something else they’ve unexpectedly run out of. Sometimes life happens, things get forgotten, deliveries are delayed, or we simply find ourselves caught short. And with type 1 diabetes, we can’t always just wait until tomorrow. 🥹

One of the things I love most about our tight-knit T1D community is how quickly people rally around one another. 💗 Someone asks for help, someone else reaches out, and suddenly a stressful situation feels a little less overwhelming.

We all know how relentless T1D can be, and there’s something incredibly special about being surrounded by people who just get it without needing a lengthy explanation.

So, I’d love to hear from the community:

💙 Have you ever found yourself desperately needing diabetes supplies after hours?

💙 Have you ever reached out to this community for help, or helped someone else who was caught short?

💙 What supplies do you wish were easier to access in an emergency?

Let’s share our experiences and ideas! You never know who might read your comment and realise they’re not alone. 🫶

Because while type 1 diabetes can sometimes feel incredibly isolating, our community reminds us that we don’t have to navigate it alone. 🤍

🤍 To every T1D parent, I see you.

The sleepless nights, the constant worry, the endless calculations, and the mental load that never switches off. Some days are harder than others, and it’s okay to feel exhausted.

Being a T1D mum has taught me a strength and patience I never knew I had, especially on the days when family and friends couldn’t see the emotional weight I was carrying behind the scenes. We find a way to keep going, even when it feels overwhelming, because our children need us. 🤍

If you’re struggling today, remember you’re not alone. There is so much strength in this community, and we’re walking this journey together, one day, one blood sugar at a time. 🩸📈📉🤍

To every T1D parent: never underestimate the strength you carry within you. You’re doing better than you think.🤍

It’s Invisible Disabilities Week (19–25 October)! 🌻💛

Not all disabilities are visible, but a little understanding and kindness can go a long way in helping everyone feel seen, understood and supported.

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Australia & New Zealand helps people with non-visible disabilities discreetly indicate that they may need additional support, understanding or patience.

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is meant to be a simple, voluntary way to signal that you live with a condition that isn’t always visible. What I find interesting is how readily some people will wear the lanyard through airport security to get understanding or support, but in the same breath, insist that type 1 diabetes “isn’t a disability.” Living with T1D means constant decision-making, vigilance, interruptions, risk, and mental load, whether anyone can see it or not. Needing understanding in certain situations simply reflects the reality of managing a condition 24/7. You don’t have to identify with the word *disability* if it doesn’t resonate with you, but denying it altogether can erase the very real challenges many in our community face. However, T1D doesn’t stop being real just because it’s well managed or hidden under clothes. I am curious how others in the T1D community feel about this. 💛🌻 Yes, it's a personal choice.
