🏠Thank you to everyone who has joined us on our journey for the past few years. We are happy to announce that we have grown and are now looking after two houses!

The previous SIL provider for this house decided to say farewell the industry. However it was important to them that the current participants were able to stay together in the house they liked.

So we have stepped in and are making sure that the current participants can stay in their house, and there is a smooth the transition for the participants, their families and the staff who have decided to stay on with SILS.

🏊 Warmer weather means it’s time to get back in the water!

The community access outing for one of our participants a few weeks ago included a trip to Tobruk Memorial Baths & Tobruk Kiosk along The Strand for some swimming, followed by lunch at Odyssey On The Strand 🌴☀️

At SILS, we’re always happy to be flexible and tailor our support around what our participants want to do. Supporting our participants to get out, get active and enjoy their community in their way! 💙

🌟 Take a moment to ask someone you care about: “Are you okay?”

Whether it’s a client, family member, friend or colleague, checking in on how they are can make a real difference.

Perhaps they aren’t behaving as they normally would. Maybe they seem out of sorts, more agitated, withdrawn, or simply not themselves. Trust your gut instinct and start a conversation.

By mentioning the changes you’ve noticed and asking how they’re going, you could give someone the opportunity to open up and let you know they’re not ok.

If they say they’re not ok, you can use the R U OK? conversation steps to show them they’re supported and encourage them to find strategies and support to help manage what they’re going through.

And if they are ok, they’ll know you’re someone who cares enough to ask. 💛🙂

The 4 steps are:
1️⃣ Ask: “Are you OK?”
2️⃣ Listen with an open mind
3️⃣ Encourage action
4️⃣ Check in

A simple question can start an important conversation. For more information and resources, visit https://www.ruok.org.au

⛵ Sailing, sunshine and community connection!

One of our participants loves getting out on the water, so we’re proud to support them to attend and participate in sailing with the wonderful Sailability in Townsville.

Sailability provides a fun, safe and welcoming environment where people with disability can get involved in sailing and other on-water activities, build confidence and enjoy being part of the community. 🌊

At SILS, we believe support should fit around the individual, their interests, goals and what they enjoy doing. Whether it’s sailing, visiting the movies, heading to the shops or trying something new, we work with our participants to help them access the activities that are important to them.

Because living life your way means being supported to do the things you love! 💙

What does a Supported Independent Living (SIL) actually provide?

SIL funding is for a support worker to help or supervise you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You may share a support worker or have an individual support worker, depending on how much help you need. The support worker will help or supervise day-to-day tasks within your home.

These can include:
🔵Support with personal care: Showering, toileting, grooming, dressing etc
🔵Support building skills: Starting small to help build skills like cooking, cleaning skills tidying as you go, building independence with using checklists and reminders.
🔵Support carrying out behaviour plans: Following agreed methods in the behaviour support plan. Look for early warning signs to step in and support. Respond calmly and safely in line with the plan.
🔵Support developing social skills: Practice chats together. Build sharing-space skills. Learn conflict resolution steps.
🔵 Support with supervision, personal safety and security: Regular check-ins especially when you're stressed. Help using spaces like the kitchen and garden safely. Help managing visitors so you're in control.
🔵 Support with medication: Reminders and helping set a routine for taking medication. Help explaining things to doctors and pharmacists. Preparation for medical appointments and support with transport and timing.
🔵Support with household budgeting and paying bills: Plan weekly budget. Go through bills in plan language. Set simple money habits like reminders and check ins, with you making the choices.
🔵Supporting community access: Plan new outings together. Provide support during the task like forms, check-ins, and staying calm in busy spaces. Finish safely, keep track of belongings, travel home, talk about what worked.

Is your SIL provider registered? We are! Mandatory registration for SIL and platform providers and new SIL Practice Standards started 1 July 2026.

Having done our registeration already means our clients won't experience any changes or disruptions, and we are already complying with the NDIS regulations. 💙

Are you a footy fan? Our clients are! We offer tailored community access for them to see their favourite team play. Unfortunately the Cowboys didn’t win but it was still a great game and good crowd that our clients enjoyed being part of!
