The Independent Living Movement encourages the establishment and use of peer support, self-empowerment, skill development and community integration by and for persons with all/cross disabilities. This is achieved on an individual and local level and allows consumers to participate in and make use of the existing services and programs, which may also be available within the community. As an alternative to institutionalization, a central objective of the Independent Living Movement is to enable individuals to take responsibility for controlling their own lives by identifying and removing social, economic, and environmental obstacles that prevent them from fulfilling their individual potential.
