As a Speech and Language Therapist working in Wales, supporting bilingual language development in both Welsh and English isn’t just best practice—it’s central to identity, culture, and community. 🏴
When a child presents with speech, language, or communication needs, parents navigating Welsh-medium, bilingual, or English-medium education often wonder: "Should we stick to just one language?"
The evidence is clear: bilingualism does not cause or worsen language difficulties. A child with language needs will experience them across all their languages, but removing a language can impact on connections to family, heritage, and school life.
In Wales SLTs play a crucial role by:
Reassuring families that continuing in Welsh-medium or dual-language settings is supported.
Assessing and supporting communication across both Welsh and English.
Protecting a young person's sense of place, belonging, and identity.
By nurturing both languages, we help children grow into confident, connected communicators in every part of their lives. 💙
