🍽️ SCHOOL DINNERS… WHAT DOES A DIETITIAN REALLY THINK?! 👀
This week I got to experience school lunch with my 4-year-old, and it was lovely to see what the children are offered (and what they actually choose to eat!).
As both a mum and a registered dietitian, I know that what’s on the menu and what ends up in little tummies can be two very different things! 😅
Overall, I was impressed with the variety available, but it also got me thinking about how we can encourage children to make more balanced choices without putting pressure on them.
🥦 A few of my thoughts:
🍎 Choice is important! A cheese sandwich or jacket potato isn’t a bad lunch, but ideally we’d like children to enjoy a variety of foods across the week, including vegetables, fruit, protein and fibre-rich carbohydrates.
🥕 Make vegetables the norm. I’d love to see more gentle encouragement to add something from the salad bar. Even a little cucumber or carrot on the plate is a positive step, whether they eat it or not!
💚 Keep it positive. Children often need repeated opportunities to explore unfamiliar foods. Encouragement, role modelling and a relaxed environment can be much more helpful than pressure to finish everything.
📚 School food is changing! The government has announced updated school food standards for England, with a greater focus on fruit, vegetables, fibre and balanced meals, alongside reducing sugar and foods high in salt and saturated fat. Most changes are planned for September 2027, subject to parliamentary approval.
👏 And finally, a big thank you to our school and catering team! Feeding lots of children every day, while juggling different preferences, dietary needs and allergies, is no small task.
For me, the goal isn’t a perfect plate every lunchtime. It’s helping children build positive relationships with food, explore different tastes and gradually develop healthy habits that last.
💬 I’d love to know - does your child eat the main school dinners, or do they stick to the same safe options every day?! 😅
