I’m having the cookie. My goals and I have discussed it, and we’re all moving forward together 🍪

Enjoying dessert can be part of taking care of yourself. You can work toward your goals, eat foods that support your health, and have something simply because it tastes good.

What deserves a closer look is what happens AFTER the cookie. Do you decide the day is ruined? Skip your next meal? Add a workout to make up for it? That’s where one food choice can turn into an exhausting cycle of restriction and starting over.

Practice letting dessert just be dessert. Enjoy it, have your next meal as usual, and keep the plans you already made for movement and rest. No repayment required.

The goal is to build habits you can keep, including on the days someone brings really good cookies.

Things I’m making time for:

Weights? Absolutely.
Pilates? Booked.
Walks? Getting my steps in.
Nutritious meals? Of course.
Dessert? Also on the agenda.

Give up my sweet treats? Now why would we do something crazy like that?

I can care about nutrition and still look forward to dessert. Eating well is about your overall habits, and enjoying a cookie doesn’t undo the nutritious meals you ate that day. You don’t have to earn it with a workout, either.

KEEP THE SWEET TREAT, GIRL.

Me leaving Pilates: “Wait… that actually wasn’t so bad today. I think I’m getting really good at this.”

Me TWO DAYS LATER trying to get out of bed: “Ohhhh, THERE it is.”

Apparently I celebrated a little early.

That’s delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS. It can peak 24–72 hours after challenging or unfamiliar exercise, including Pilates.

However...let this be a reminder: you don’t have to be sore for a workout to count.

Day one: Pilates princess.
Day two: still cute.
Day three: suddenly every staircase is my enemy.

Protein, stretching, recovery, strength training… and somehow my knees are still like: creak… crack… pop.

But put on a good song after a couple tequila shots and these SAME knees get a full factory reset.

Okay, JK. I don’t drink (thanks, lupus), but you get the gist. The song does enough on its own.

Dancing? No problem. Dropping it like my joints didn’t sound 87 years old six hours ago? YES.

Like excuse me??? Where was this mobility during my workout?!

If my knees can do all this for a good song, I might need a DJ at the squat rack.

Please tell me I’m not the only one whose knees find a second life on a night out.

They say exercise helps improve your memory… meanwhile I’m standing in the gym like, “Wait… was that set 2 or set 4?”

How can I remember exactly what weight I lifted three weeks ago but forget what set I’m on within 45 seconds? 🫠

Then comes the Nancy Drew investigation: Was that the set where my song came on? Did I already do the last one? How long have I been sitting here trying to figure this out?

Regular exercise can support memory and brain health. Keeping track of four sets, however, is apparently asking too much of mine.

Please tell me I’m not the only one doing an extra set “just in case.”

“Having muscles won’t make you happy.”

Well honey… explain why I’m doing a full celebration every time I catch a little pump in the mirror.

One good workout and suddenly the shoulders are shoulder-ing, the arms are popping, and I’m hitting a little shimmy between sets like I just won something. (Well, I guess I did. I won the right to make everyone look at my biceps.)

Is muscle the key to happiness? Maybe not. But feeling myself getting stronger, seeing the results of my hard work, and being proud of what my body can do? That puts a smile on my face.

So yes… the post-workout pump may be temporary, but the happiness is VERY real.

People see the strength, the consistency, the PRs, and think it’s all discipline. Meanwhile, the coffee behind the scenes would like a little credit.

Yes, I train hard, eat well, and prioritize my health. But a coffee before a workout? Happy to have her on the team.

And by “a coffee,” I mean a reasonable amount of caffeine, not seven coffees and a prayer. Caffeine can help with alertness and exercise performance, but more isn’t always better.

No matter how much you wish it may... bestie, it can’t replace food, sleep, hydration, or recovery.

The gains are mine. The coffee is a loyal teammate.
