When you speak with a Clinical Psychologist, they’re doing more than listening to the events of your week.

They’re working to understand the bigger picture. That might include noticing patterns in how you respond to stressful situations, exploring beliefs you hold about yourself, or identifying behaviours that provide short-term relief but may be contributing to ongoing difficulties.

This process is part of what’s known as psychological formulation. It helps psychologists develop an individual understanding of what’s happening, rather than relying on a diagnosis alone.

At Canopy, Dr Henry Austin takes an evidence-based, collaborative approach to treatment, working with clients to understand their experiences and identify meaningful goals for therapy.

Different person, different relationship, but somehow you find yourself dealing with the same patterns again.

Maybe you expect rejection even when things are going well. You put the other person’s needs ahead of your own. You find yourself drawn to people who are emotionally unavailable, or notice that relatively small changes in someone’s behaviour can trigger a much bigger emotional response.

Sometimes these patterns can be connected to schemas, deeply held beliefs and expectations about ourselves, other people and relationships that can develop through earlier experiences.

For example, someone who has developed an expectation that people will eventually leave may become highly sensitive to signs of distance in a relationship. Someone who has learnt that their own needs come second may repeatedly find themselves in relationships where they give far more than they receive.

Schema therapy is an evidence-based psychological therapy that can help identify these longstanding patterns, understand where they may have developed and explore how they continue to influence thoughts, emotions and behaviour in the present.

At Canopy, schema therapy is one of the evidence-based approaches our clinical psychologists may draw upon depending on your individual needs and what brings you to therapy.

Recognising a pattern is one thing. Understanding what keeps bringing you back to it can be an important part of changing it.

Can you grieve someone before you’ve lost them?

For many carers, partners and family members, grief doesn’t necessarily begin after a person dies.

Anticipatory grief can occur when someone you care about is living with a serious, progressive or life-limiting condition, including conditions such as dementia or terminal cancer.

You might be grieving changes that have already happened, the relationship you once had, the future you imagined together, or the knowledge that further changes may be ahead.

And those feelings can exist alongside everything else that comes with supporting someone. Love, responsibility, exhaustion, sadness, frustration, guilt and even moments of enjoyment can all be present at the same time.

It can also be difficult to give yourself permission to grieve when the person is still here.

Psychological support isn’t about telling you how you should feel about what’s happening. Sessions can give carers and family members their own space to process the changes they’re experiencing, make sense of difficult or conflicting emotions, and find ways to look after their own wellbeing while continuing to support someone they care about.

At Canopy, our clinical psychologists provide individual psychological support in Nedlands, Murdoch, and via Telehealth.

Anxiety isn’t always what you think it might be.

Something we often see at Canopy is people not realising that what they’re experiencing could be anxiety, simply because it doesn’t look or feel the way they expected it to.
It might be replaying conversations long after they’ve ended, overthinking how you came across, putting off certain tasks or messages, needing reassurance, struggling to make decisions or avoiding situations that make you uncomfortable.

Over time, these things can become such a normal part of how you operate that you don’t necessarily recognise them as being connected to anxiety.

Of course, doing any of these things doesn’t automatically mean you have an anxiety disorder. But if you’re noticing patterns that are causing distress or getting in the way of your day-to-day life, speaking with a psychologist can help you better understand what’s happening and why.

At Canopy, our clinical psychologists work with people experiencing anxiety using evidence-based psychological therapies. Sessions can help you identify the patterns that may be keeping anxiety going and develop practical ways to respond to thoughts, feelings and situations differently.

October is Mental Health Month, and this year’s theme is Together We Thrive. 🧠

It’s a reminder of the role that connection and support can play in our mental health, whether that’s through the people around us, our workplaces and communities, or professional support when we need it.

At Canopy, we also want to use Mental Health Month to reinforce that you don’t need to wait until you’re struggling significantly before speaking with a psychologist.

Clinical psychology can support people experiencing anxiety, low mood, stress, and a range of other mental health concerns, but sessions can also provide a space to better understand patterns in your thoughts, emotions and behaviour and develop strategies that support you moving forward.

Our Principal Clinical Psychologist, Dr Henry Austin, provides appointments at Canopy, as well as via Telehealth, making support accessible wherever you are.

Therapy isn’t always about fitting an experience neatly into one box.🍃

At Canopy, we take a transdiagnostic approach to therapy, recognising that psychological difficulties can overlap, interact and affect different areas of a person’s life.

Rather than focusing solely on a particular diagnosis or set of symptoms, our psychologists work with the whole person and the individual experiences, patterns and challenges that bring them to therapy.

This approach allows us to support people experiencing a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep difficulties, substance use, chronic pain and more.

Appointments are currently available with Dr Henry Austin, Principal Clinical Psychologist, and Dr Tom Fiocco-Walton, Clinical Psychologist Registrar.

Understanding OCD starts with understanding what it actually is.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a complex mental health condition that can present very differently from person to person, and often in ways that aren’t reflected in common stereotypes about OCD.

Having the right language to understand obsessions and compulsions can be an important first step, particularly when someone has found their experiences confusing or difficult to make sense of.

In this carousel, we explore what OCD can look like and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), an evidence-based psychological treatment for OCD.

A conversation can make a difference. 💛

Today marks both World Su***de Prevention Day and R U OK?Day, two important reminders of the role we can all play in looking out for the people around us.

Checking in doesn’t require having the perfect words or knowing how to fix what someone is going through.

Sometimes, simply asking “Are you OK?”, listening without judgement and giving someone the space to talk can be an important first step.

It’s also important to remember that support doesn’t need to wait until someone reaches a crisis point. If you’ve been struggling with your mental health, feeling overwhelmed or finding things harder to manage than usual, reaching out for professional support can help.

At Canopy, our psychologists provide evidence-based psychological care in a supportive and confidential environment.

To schedule an appointment, you can book online via https://www.canopypsych.com.au/.

If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, call 000. For 24/7 crisis support in Australia, contact Lifeline on 13 11 14.

Bullying can affect people of all ages.

While it’s often associated with school, it can also occur in workplaces, social groups and online, and its impact can extend well beyond the bullying itself.

Research shows that ongoing bullying is associated with an increased risk of anxiety, depression, low self-esteem and difficulties with trust and relationships.

For some, these effects can persist into adulthood if left unaddressed.

For teenagers, bullying can make it difficult to feel safe, connected and confident during an already challenging stage of life. For adults, workplace or social bullying can contribute to chronic stress, self-doubt and emotional exhaustion.

If you or someone you know is being bullied, it’s important to remember that bullying is never a reflection of your worth. Reaching out to a trusted adult, manager, teacher, friend or mental health professional can be an important first step towards getting support.

Let’s recognise the importance of creating environments where people feel respected, included and safe.

If the effects of bullying are continuing to impact your mental health, our psychologists provide evidence-based, personalised support for both adolescents (12+) and adults.

Together, we can help you process your experiences, rebuild confidence and develop strategies to move forward.
