The first week of February is National White Cane week in Canada.

For blind people, the white cane is an essential tool that gives them the ability to achieve a full and independent life. It allows them to move freely and safely from place to place—whether it's at work, at school, or around our neighbourhoods.

When you see a blind person using a white cane, remember that the cane is their tool to safely and independently navigate the environment. There's no need to shout warnings or try to physically steer them so that our canes won't bump into things. Remember that they are using their canes to explore what is around them.

A MentorAbility Partnership: PPRC Inc. & the City of Ottawa

We approached Stacey Wu at the City of Ottawa to partner with us on holding a virtual mentor event to complete five mentor matches. This was a pioneering effort for both parties, and we wanted to test the waters to see if it would succeed. To our delight, we were able to hold twelve one-on-one mentor matches. With such strong interest, the event was a resounding success.

January is Mentoring Month! Steve Brzezynski, owner of SLB Carpentry, participated as a mentor last year with MentorAbility and says, “there is so much for a protégé to learn – especially if they are deciding if the career is right for them.”

PPRC MentorAbility is a full-or half-day-or virtual mentoring experience. Employers (Mentors) donate their time to be matched with job seekers (Protégés) who have a disability to help them explore career opportunities. At the same time, the Protégés share insights with their Mentors to help foster more inclusive work environments.

MentorAbility benefits you as an employer in several ways:

· develops your talent pipeline with new recruits who hold a diversity of skills

· expands your capacity as an inclusive employer by learning from someone with a disability

· demonstrates community leadership

· increases employment opportunities for job seekers who self-identify as having a disability.

We are seeking applications from employers who wish to Mentor a job seeker living with a disability. Help make a difference in 2023!

Contact the PPRC, MentorAbility Program Coordinator, Susan Forster at [email protected] or 613-748-3220.

01/16/2023

“Digital inclusion is about ensuring someone with a barrier can navigate and use an online system,” said Ian Grant of Performance Plus Rehabilitative Care Inc. “Meaning they can do everything I can do.”

Digital inclusion shows up in Zoom meetings when someone needs closed captions, in webinars when the screen reader is reading the Q&A in the chat over the people speaking, or most commonly on a website.

I was reading OBJNews and saw this great article about Performance Plus Rehabilitative Care Inc. (my wonderful client).

Fieldless Farms in Cornwall enlisted PPRC's help to recruit reliable people to join their team. Linda Simpson says "It's all about finding the right fit for employer and jobseeker, and that both parties are prepared and confident about their new relationship".
