In some cases, they help patients learn about options by researching diagnoses and treatments. Learn more about our services on our website.(http

🤩April is Parkinson's Awareness Month🤩

🔦Let's shed some light on the challenges faced by those living with Parkinson's disease, particularly the phenomenon of freezing and the triggers that exacerbate it.

As Physiotherapists & Occupational therapists, we play a crucial role in helping our patients navigate these challenges and improve their quality of life.

🥶Understanding Freezing in Parkinson's🥶

Freezing is a common and distressing symptom experienced by many individuals with Parkinson's disease. It refers to a sudden, temporary inability to move, often described as feeling "stuck" to the ground. Freezing episodes can occur during walking, turning, or when initiating movement, that can lead to falls and injuries.

🔍Identifying Triggers🔎

Various triggers can provoke freezing episodes in Parkinson's patients, including:

1. Stress and Anxiety: Emotional stress and anxiety can exacerbate freezing. Encouraging relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing and mindfulness, can help manage stress levels.

2. Narrow or Crowded Spaces: Walking through narrow doorways or crowded areas can trigger freezing. Practicing walking in open spaces and improving spatial awareness can be beneficial.

3. Dual Tasking: Performing two tasks simultaneously, such as walking and talking, can lead to freezing. Focusing on one task at a time and practicing dual-task exercises under supervision can help.

4. Sudden Changes in Direction: Quick turns or changes in direction can provoke freezing. Practicing slow, deliberate turns and incorporating turning exercises into therapy can improve control.

Let's continue to raise awareness, advocate for our patients, and strive for better outcomes in Parkinson's care this month and beyond!

Tough conversations can make decision making down the road much less stressful.

The purpose of advance care planning is for you to be able to share your wishes, beliefs, thoughts and values with those around you. Including with the person (or people) you choose to be your Substitute Decision Maker (SDM). Having these conversations will help your SDM better understand how you would like them to make decisions. Having conversations about advance care planning can also lessen the anxiety we have around our health, personal care, and end-of-life decision making.

Parkinson's disease dementia

"Parkinson’s disease dementia is a decline in thinking and reasoning skills that develops in some people living with Parkinson’s at least a year after diagnosis. The brain changes caused by Parkinson’s disease begin in a region that plays a key role in movement, leading to early symptoms that include tremors and shakiness, muscle stiffness, a shuffling step, stooped posture, difficulty initiating movement and lack of facial expression. As brain changes caused by Parkinson’s gradually spread, the person may also experience changes in mental functions, including memory and the ability to pay attention, make sound judgments and plan the steps needed to complete a task." - Alzheimer's Association
