Hello dear caregivers, I haven’t posted much since my role as a family caregiver shifted. Please accept my apologies for that.

I have been busy taking care my beautiful mother since she had a stroke in April 2017. She is now residing in a Nursing Home since last October. Her physical, emotional and spiritual health has somewhat improved since her arrival in her new home. Indeed her life is very different to what she was used too, but my siblings and I visit daily to help diminish her loneliness and ensure she continues to contribute to the community as much as possible.

She attends church three times a week, uses the wheelchair-bike and exercises regularly. She joins her co-residents to the activities. She goes outside daily and enjoys the sunshine and socialization.

She continues to enjoy making healing crystal bracelets and prays for those who requests one. Thank you to all those who have purchased one.

This hobby has given her a sense of mission and she loves being able to contribute to the wellness of others.

What Causes Holiday Stress?

1. Unhappy memories. Going home for the holidays naturally makes people remember old times, but for you the memories may be more bitter than sweet.

2. Toxic relatives. Holidays can put you in the same room with relatives you avoid the rest of the year.

3.The holidays can highlight everything that’s changed in your lives -- a divorce, a death in the family, a son who’s making his first trip back home after starting college. Any of these can really unsettle a gathering and add holiday stress.

4. For others, it’s the monotonous sameness of family holiday gatherings that depresses them -- the same faces, the same jokes, the same food on the same plates.

5. Obligations and errands. Being so busy that you have no time for yourself.

TIPS FOR AVOIDING HOLIDAY STRESS

1. Don’t do the same old thing. If the usual family gathering is causing holiday stress, try something else.

2. Don’t expect miracles. If your holiday anxiety stems from a deeper history of family conflict, don’t expect that you’ll be able to resolve any big underlying issues now.

3. Don’t overdo it. To reduce holiday stress, you have to pace yourself. Long before the family gatherings actually happen, decide on some limits and stick to them. Stay one or two nights at your parents’ house instead of three or four. Plan to drop by the holiday party for a couple of hours instead of staying all night.

There is a very big difference between CAREGIVING and CARETAKING.

Elizabeht Kupferman, counselor, explains that "caretaking is the hallmark of codependency and is rooted in insecurity and in a need to be in control, while CAREGIVING IS AN EXPRESSION OF KINDNESS AND LOVE.

She explains that CARETAKING IS A DYSFUNCTIONAL BEHAVIOUR that can be changed. As with changing any behaviour, becoming aware is the first step to identifying where we are situated on the caregiving continuum.

4 Signs A Caregiver May Be Suffering From Codependence

1. Knowing what's best for our loved one and insisting on doing everything our way.

2. Trying to please everyone but yourself.
Sometimes as a caregiver we do what others want us to do rather than what we want to do. Praise and positive responses become the reward and our behaviour continues.

3. Believing that you can read your loved one's mind.
Another sign of codependence is when we try to do the other person's thinking for them and assume things that are not always correct.

4. Being pleased that your loved one depends on you to take care of them..
Some caregivers, consciously or subconsciously, make themselves needed and indispensable so their loved ones will remain dependent on them, and them alone.

Another awesome retreat at Centre in Chénéville, QC, with 13 beautiful ladies.

I just came back from a wonderful weekend at Birla Center with 13 other wonderful ladies. This was our forth "Rest and Restore your Spirit Retreat' and it was again awesome and beyond words.

We were blessed by everyone's essence and unconditional love. I am in ferocious gratitude for the blessings received during the 48 hours spent together. The labyrinth walk, on a perfect autumn day, was a true pilgrimage where most ladies experienced spiritual awakening and growth.

I want to thank my helpers, Jeanne, AngĂšle and Pauletta, as well as the staff at Birla Centre for making this a true success in every way. My cup runneth over!!!

Our next retreat is booked for June 23, 2017.
