Our graduate student clinicians and faculty spent the day with the kindergarten and first grade classes, completing speech, language and hearing screenings.

Early screenings help catch small concerns before they become big ones, so kids can head into their school years ready to listen, talk and learn. It’s also hands-on training for our students, who are preparing to become speech-language pathologists.

Meet our Young Adult Social Group!

Each week, young adults get together at the Ludden Clinic to move, create and connect. Sessions mix a little exercise with a game or special project, and every one is a chance to practice conversation, teamwork and making plans with friends.

The group is led by SXU graduate student clinicians who are training to become speech-language pathologists, with supervision from our licensed faculty. It’s real-world communication practice that feels like hanging out with friends.

Stuttering is one of the most misunderstood ways people speak. Most of what people believe about it comes from movies, old advice, or a well-meaning relative, and most of it is wrong. 🗣️

1️⃣ It isn't caused by nerves. Stuttering is neurological, and it tends to run in families.
2️⃣ No one stutters because a parent did something wrong.
3️⃣ Telling someone to "slow down" or "relax" is not treatment. It often makes speaking harder.
4️⃣ Adults who stutter are not all waiting to be fixed.

Some want tools for fluency. Some want to stutter more openly and comfortably. We work toward both of those goals here, because both are legitimate.

Which sounds should my child have by now?

By age 3, most children are understood by strangers about three quarters of the time. By age 4, it's closer to all of the time, even if a few sounds are still messy.

What matters more than any single sound is whether people outside your family can understand your child. If they can't, get an evaluation. Waiting rarely helps, and early therapy is shorter therapy.

Every person deserves a way to be heard. 💬

October is AAC Awareness Month. Augmentative and alternative communication is any tool that gives a person a way to say what they mean: a picture board, a speech-generating device, signs, a single switch.

The worry we hear most from parents is that a device will make their child stop trying to talk. The research has pointed the other way for decades. Communication builds communication.

If your child has words but not enough of them, AAC is worth a conversation. The Ludden Clinic offers AAC evaluations, and we'd love to talk with you.

Who is behind the glass?

Every session at the Ludden Clinic is supervised by ASHA-certified faculty.
For adults rebuilding language after a stroke, that supervision matters.
Finding the right starting point, choosing which words and skills to target first, coaching a spouse or caregiver, and adjusting all of it as recovery unfolds over months is not a checklist.
