We are calling on artists to explore the theme of generational poverty and the development of support networks to break the generational poverty cycle. How does poverty affect human beings and the societies we live in? How do communities adapt, resist, suffer, and sometimes flourish even within systems of injustice? How does generational poverty change the work of healthcare? What does “ending injustice” look like?

We invite you to submit visual work (paintings, prints, sculptures, collages, drawings, mixed-media work, etc.) that explores the theme of generational poverty and social justice solutions. Ut Health students and staff please submit via online form https://forms.office.com/r/8Hq1msk5r2, for our community please email your submission to [email protected]

Connective Tissue, UT Health San Antonio’s annual literary and arts journal, is accepting submissions for the 2025 issue of the journal!

Connective Tissue is a publication of the Cheever Center of Medical Humanities and Ethics (CMHE) and is open to submissions from all students, faculty, staff, residents, and alumni from UT Health San Antonio. The journal publishes high-quality original works of prose, poetry, 55-word stories, photography, and visual art. This year, we are also including original music works as a brand-new category! Please submit to our Connective Tissue Submission Google Form https://forms.gle/36kLcFyD3EkWgVYF6 by Sunday, January 5th, 2025 at 11:59PM CT.

We are excited to announce this year’s theme, “From the Hearth”. This year, we pay homage to the age-old tradition of gathering around the hearth, where stories pass from one generation to the next, each thread woven with memories, wisdom, and emotion. The hearth symbolizes not just the literal warmth of a fire but family, community, and identity; a place where personal histories and collective experiences meet to nourish the soul. Just as stories shared by the fire offer comfort and connection, the narratives of patients, caregivers, and healthcare workers form the heart of clinical practice. It is where shared stories — of illness, recovery, and resilience — create bonds, offer solace, and bring light to even the most difficult moments. We welcome and encourage all submissions, regardless if it is directly related to the theme.

Please contact the Co-Editors-In-Chief, Stephanie Batch and Sana Suhail, at [email protected] with any questions or concerns. If you would like a copy of the 2024 edition, please stop by the CMHE office. We look forward to receiving your submissions!
