With Halloween just hours away, your little ghosts and goblins are eager to hit the candy jackpot. But what can be spookier than creepy crawlies and witches? Sugar bugs and decaying teeth from too much sugar and dental plaque. Before you hand over goodies to your trick-or-treater, check out CDHA member and DentalXowner Anaida’s Deti’s 6 tips on how to keep a healthy smile for Halloween. Lack of access to preventive oral care places vulnerable and marginalized populations in Canada at high risk for oral disease. We hope that government officials like Kamal Khera, Minister of Diversity, Inclusion and Persons with Disabilities, will recognize that for a Canada Dental Care Plan that is truly equitable and inclusive, it must reflect the diverse needs of Canadians across the country. ahnee (aw‐NEE) Greetings

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and we would like to begin the day by acknowledging the national office location of Canada’s dental
hygienists on the traditional and unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg people. We recognize Indigenous Peoples long-standing presence in this territory.

This acknowledgment should not serve as closure, resignation, or acceptance of the past or present but should remind us of the true history of this country and provoke thoughtful reflection, conversation, and lasting change.

CDHA has spent the last year working with a consultant to build our diversity, equity, and inclusion pillars including a commitment to recognizing Canada’s colonial history and its traumatic impact on the lives of Indigenous peoples. We look forward to our continued journey on this path of truth and reconciliation.

Our staff and dental hygienists across the country will spend today, learning, reflecting, and commemorating .

May we all spend today reflecting on the harms and tragedies of the past and consider how we can each in our own way move forward in the spirit of reconciliation affirming our commitment and responsibility in improving relationships coast to coast to coast.

miigwetch (MEE‐gwetch) Thank you.

Yesterday (and every May 31) was World No To***co Day, an event designed to inform the public on the dangers of using to***co. Every day is a good opportunity to be reminded of the negative impacts to***co has on oral health. Use these CDHA resources to educate yourself.

The oral effects of to***co use include oral and throat cancers, chronic gum disease, tooth decay, tooth abrasion, stains, bad breath, dry mouth, impaired taste and smell, and mouth sores that do not heal.
